What’s your biggest or favourite rant? Women who constantly undersell their ability when it comes to riding by saying they can’t do something or aren’t fast enough or don’t have the technical skills, only to then go riding with them and find out they are more than capable - and then the look on their face when they realise they are good enough. And calling ‘track’ gives you nothing. ‘Track please’ on the other hand….

How old are you?
It’s not polite to ask a lady her age. However I do pass the 30+ test

What state do you live?
NSW

How long have you been riding?
Since 18 (+ whippersnapper years). I didn’t really ride as a teenager, but was hooked when I bought my first bike to ride to uni.

What styles of riding do you do?
DH/XC/Freestyle/Commuting with style

How often do you ride?
Commute every day (sounds really cool, but I only live 5 minutes from work)
XC night rides
Every weekend

Tell us about your bike/s?
1 x baguetti (the bike you ride when you are getting a baguette. Also required is a wheel of cheese, some garlic and a bottle of red wine. It has matching wicker baskets and everything)
1 x XC hardtail
1 x Giant Cypher (the women’s version of the Trance)
1 x Specialised SX II Trail
1 x 125cc Sachs Madass

Have you had any significant bike related injuries?
No. I can’t understand why some guys need to hug the ground/trees violently all the time. They’re not hard to avoid ;P

Do you compete and at what level?
I dislike racing. However I have been doing club DH rounds this year to push my boundaries so I can get better at trail riding. So far it’s been pretty good.

Any cycling highlights worth posting?
I ride to work in my suits, skirts and dresses. (Why do commuters have to dress up in all their kit and caboodle?) Townies are great. It is like riding a wet noodle – there is no stiffness in the frames. Does wonders for my ability to track stand.

What forums/subforums do you visit the most on rotorburn? Girls Only, General, DH

Rants? Gender discrimination in the sport. I would love to watch more of the girls riding in the videos, but there are barely any to be had.

Also just generally. Guys will be nice to your face when you are riding and encouraging, but you only have to flick through these forums briefly to see that riding in Australia is generally a sausage party.

The comments I really dislike are when one guy calls out to the other saying “you ride like a girl” or something to that effect. What is wrong with riding like a girl? I ride like a girl and I ride better than a lot of guys. Those sorts of comments just make you feel really unwelcome – that you are an outsider and always will be.

Also with the Vets forum: you’ll notice that the very first post was written in a way that assumed that only “blokes” could be vets (“blokes” being a term not usually applied to older females). Yes, you could say that the girls have their very own forum, but all the other forums are very heavily male dominated. Why does this one have to continue with the “no women here” theme?

I’m really glad for the girls who just ignore this and try to be a part of the bike community. But it is fustrating – it is hard to get girls to ride when the guys continually reinforce the notion (in various subtle ways) that riding is "boys time".

Nice minirant Cypher, spot on. That's just become my new favourite (though rant is an overstatement & I mean it in a positive way).

I get frustrated when my wife implies that riding is more of a guy thing because I know she enjoys it immensely, but then I can't say she's incorrect when the stereotype is reinforced in too many places and it's impossible to ignore sometimes, especially for 'newbies', and it does have an effect. Hopefully things will change

Hi Cypher, we're not all that way. Some of us even do trail maintenance to help make it safer for the the fairer sex to wander around in the bush and know some "real jerk" isn't lurking around the next bend. I'm always impressed with the girls out on our trails, i dunno if i'd be as game in this day!
