Flat Earth, religion, exBurner, roadie hate, alien existence, mushrooms and badgers thread

I grew up in a Pentecostal Cult as a child, until I escaped the church and the family home at 15.

I don't have an issue with God's teachings or the Bible in general.

The biggest issue for me was the way the ministry of the church used the guise of "religion" to basically control, brainwash, pillage financially and indoctrinate the flock (congregation) with their own MAN MADE Ideals/Rules.

The elders/pastors would basically stand on the stage and say that anyone that didn't attend this particular church WAS GOING TO HELL, if you didn't tithe then you didn't love Jesus, if a couple got divorced they would eject the entire family from the fold. If you had family or friends that didn't attend the church you were not to socialise with them less they drag you into worldly temptations .. etc etc etc

So many broken and fractured families out there because of organised religion

Can you feel the love....

I don't begrudge or judge anyone on their beliefs, I am of the opinion that if someone wants to believe in something that makes THEM happy and they're not trying to convert everyone they meet then who are they hurting ?

My Motto: Never get involved in an argument about religion or politics... No one ever wins
Pretty much the same dynamics in a lot of other church groups. I've seen a bit of the inside workings myself as a kid to a few religious groups. Once they know that you won't accept what they do, they'll isolate you because they're worried you'll taint the other members.

If you believe that the earth is flat then your beliefs have just crossed you into the danger zone.
Nah. Belief is fine. It's what you do with it.
The earth even operates like it's flat in local human scale.

Some beliefs are going to cause you to do crazy shit. Like we shouldn't give the flat earthers a job at NASA, or elect them to Parliament.

My issue with certain beliefs surrounding an afterlife is that some have the idea of eternal damnation for people who don't prescribe to a specific religion/approach. Like forever. No returns, no do-overs.
You might say - what rational person would believe that? Or what god would have such a scheme for their 'creations'.
But the problem is... if you did believe it. Like really believed it. How could you not try and save every last person you know from the fires of hell!

So the belief is what leads to justification of other things. How far you take that might depend on how much you're willing to go against other conflicting beliefs, like believing that people should have autonomy. Do you save people from themselves?

So what you're saying, in essence, is that e-bikes should be banned?

There is more than one of those beliefs, therefore everybody is headed to hell. So you may as well sin yourself silly and make the trip worth the destination.

Gonna put this here - raised Christian. Don't practice. Much a science believer. However...

I'm much more convinced that many of the bible stories and various historical artefacts (egyptian pyramids, their building, geometry accuracy etc.) Have been influenced by extra terrestrial forces. Yep. Aliens.

Along with the argument around religeon, science also has much about it that is not understood and is constantly being revised, reinterpreted and proven, disproven etc. That is the scientific method. We know ALOT, but I also think we don't know much on a cosmic scale. I have to accept that if aliens do exist, we know pretty much nothing meaningfull about science and what we are doing on this planet under the guise of "science" must look like the equivalent of rubbing rocks together and scratching our heads.

I do however believe that in our lifetimes we will make some meaningful contact with an intelligent life other than human. And when this happens, theologians will have their work cut out for them. What if this alien race also has a religeon? Do our religions have a tie to their existence? All really cool and interesting things I hope to learn about in my lifetime. Who knows, maybe they will be able to prove or disprove an existence of all mighty powerful being or force. I understand the catholic Church is debating these questions already

Well... everyone except the Mormons (according to South Park).

Actually, hell is never mentioned in the Old Testament (so it’s not a Jewish thing), and barely in the New Testament. JW’s don’t believe in it either. Some English translations of Greek and Hebrew texts reference Sheol and Hades, which basically just translate to ‘grave’.

Long thread with more drama than my antivax SIL.
Just to jump and say as an ex-missionary kid (Nigeria), I'm now solidly atheist and left with an existentialist panic level dread of thinking about death and eternity.
I did love growing up overseas though.

Most of us get that occasionally…but only briefly…
I could pretend I believe in an afterlife, but I wouldn’t believe it, and you can’t lie to yourself deep down.

I actually find it quite reassuring knowing that I and the rest of us and pretty much everything are essentially meaningless accidents that only very very briefly blink in and back out of existence never to be seen again. I think it makes it all the more amazing.

Not agreeing or disagreeing with your views, There's one thing that people tend to forget when it comes to things like the Pyramids getting built and ask how people could have possibly built something so massive, and that is TIME.... It took a really, really, realllllyyy fucking long time, not like these days where a skyscraper is built in a few months. Imagine 40,000 people or a whole village/city spent their entire life and their kids spent their entire lives just dragging rocks up a ramp day in day out...or it could have been aliens.

Undoubtedly aliens, no way the workers were all native born Egyptians.
