we all know there's hotness for the EV SUV/SEDAN market buuttt,,,, what about medium/large vans? I've done a bit of scanning and there doesn't appear to be much in this market.

If there's a good enough ev van im thinking it could be a good thing to convert it into a basic no frills camper that i could fit a bike in otherwise imma just have to grab a standard van for that.
VW are releasing the ID version of the transporter.

the byd at around the 40k mark (Assuming it gets slammed with gov taxes and shipping fees here) seems like the go, especially if it can manage 400km.

Not sure what accessibility is like to the charging infrastructure but my secondary thoughts were is I could maybe grab a 5kw inverter, install some sort of "In van" Fast charging or just a standard 240v outlet, look at the legalities and logistics of it and a few 400-500w panels and hey presto, your own charging infra.

but even at 400km range (If it can manage that real world) is actually not bad for a van really.

There’s quite a few elec vans coming to the UK and European countries, but uptake here will be slow until charging infrastructure is more widespread (IMO).

I adjusted the bonnet rubber stopper on the showroom display model 3 the other day, that got the bonnet mostly lined up :) Sales peeps looked at me as if I was a bit mad, but come on guys, details matter! It was literally the first thing people saw when they walk in the shop…

But overall the fit and finish seemed more than fine. Much better paint job than the Alfa, although that’s perhaps not the highest bar…
Mechanic I use has made a bit of a niche for himself being an independent EV service guy. Was at the workshop one day when he had both US and Chinese built model 3s under the roof. The Chinese one shat all over the US built car for fit and finish, and he reckoned all the model 3 issues he'd encountered were on US cars

Yep. Will be interesting to see how the German built ones go.

The only issues they’re having with the Chinese ones is the Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are more sensitive to cold weather, so some North Americans and Northern Europeans have been having a minor whinge on range loss. Nowhere in Australia gets cold enough for that to be a problem though.

depends how sever it the issue of range loss for cold weather is. There's deffnitely places here where temps go down to between -5 and 0 quite regularly, Canberra for instance quite often sees -4 temps.

Doubt you'd have model 3 if you live rural though but in case you do in tas great lakes area often sees around -10 with maximums of 2-4c in winter but that's at the extreme end.

Yeah, but it’s not a whole season of daily driving in sub zero conditions you’re dealing with.

Two bits of data I have that are easily accessible

Capacity vs temperature chart for a Panasonic NCR-18650A cell. Pretty typical. Panasonic engineering specify 10c as low temperature cutoff.

Samsung INR18650-35E show % of rated capacity at various temps, 40% capacity at -10c

It could be a real factor. EV owners in Tasmania will need a wood fired heater for the garage. The tv tag line just writes itself here.

If you’re really worried about range that day, just precondition the battery before you leave the house. Sorted.

$2.05 for 95 today. The economics of a Model 3 are getting better and better... I almost wish I did more kms! If I did 30,000 a year its a no brainer, but at the 8,000kms we currently do annually it still doesn't stack up. Ask me again at $4 a litre...

Pffft, you'll easily rack up 20K km per year driving up to Derby and back once you you make it to Tas

They fit a bike inside with no passengers, there's a hire one in Canberra at Kingsborough/free if you know anyone who lives in the residences, part of the body corp fees, my mate fit his Trek inside fine front wheel off, saved taking his car to Stromlo and getting it dusty.
