The Photo Snob Thread

Also guys, need some help! My 17 - 85mm (only lense dad and I have til I buy my own 50D) has shit itself, but it's weird. Near the end of one of my shoots I started getting the "err 01" about the lense and camera not communicating or wahtever and have to clean the contacts. Turning it on or off for a while made it go away. Then I did another shoot, and it took 200 photos before it happened. Then it just kept happening. So I stopped. Then we cleaned the contacts with alcohol, then dad went to use it while I was in Brisbane, and it wouldn't even take a single shot. So he cleaned the contacts with a rubber. Still wouldn't take a single shot. I got home, still wouldn't take a single shot. So I took it to a friend, and we put anotehr lense on - worked perfect. Put our lense on his camera, same problem. Wouldn't take a single shot.

Then I put it in my car, drove my merry way home and told dad the bad news. He then got the camera out, and started snapping shots. We seriously took about 50 photos and couldn't get it to happen again. WTF do we do? Anyone got any ideas? :( p.s. warranty is expired.
Hoping you didn't use a cotton bud or anything that could have shed fibres? They can easily jam your shutter. Remounting often solves the issue I've heard...

I've had a crack at editing some old photos, C&C would be nice.

Conor, in all honesty I think you need to begin exploring some interesting places and subjects. Go on a roadtrip over the weekend, find something totally different to what you normally shoot, or set something up with a friend. The composition of the shots aren't bad at all, but you need to have subject matter that tells more of a story.

This is the problem with many of the photos in this thread...candid head shots are not interesting, unless they show purpose or meaning. Hardly any of the candid stuff on here portrays something near an emotion or an environment which draws ones attention.

Whilst everyone is obsessing over lighting, composition and angles, you are forgetting the MOST important aspect of a photograph...the STORY behind it. Perhaps it is partly to do with the fact that this thread seems to be turning into a "I was bored so I went out and took this today in the house", but wheres the interesting stuff?

How does Alan manage to post a photo of a pair of dragonflies, or a water dragon that instantly captures ones attention? Because it has subject and purpose. The dragonflies are busy getting it on (insect porn?) and the water dragon seems to be poised as if it is looking straight through the screen at you.

Getting people to express their emotions through their faces and eyes is hard, but as a photog, you need to be able to bring this out of people.

Sorry Conor, I don't want to sound like I am having a go at you, because I'm not....It is a much more general observation. But it'd be great to see one of your subjects pull an expression that draws attention or focus to what they are doing, or what they are thinking. Then, and only then, is it time to hone your skills in photoshop:)

Flashes? What flashes?
I have decided that I am a massive retard at flash photography, so i've given it up
Quite like it dude, but watch what you do with selective colouring and fill light...the black shirt looks horrible and the whole shot has a purple tinge that i'm not such a fan of.

A handful of shots from my work placement.

The first allied shots of World War II were fired from here. Google it. The story sounds exciting, but it really isn't :p
Pain in the neck to expose correctly...

The Passenger Waiting Room at the Quarantine Station. Rather pleasant sitting under the flagstaff eating lunch...

Not so sure about this last one. Anyone offer any opinions?

1st shot is nice, but im thinking how awesome it could be with a nice black bit of glass (ND filter) find the lack of colour odd, but the compo is superb. Oh and one the topic of pier shots :D

(does come up much better on a black background)

Cheers man, I really do need to get out to more places, pretty hard being 16 so I don't have my P plates yet. I hope to get out this weekend at some time and try a few new things, I'm just the sorta person that lacks motivation to do much haha.

Thanks for all the hints/advice, and I don't have photoshop either.

First shoot since getting the 40D - and first action shot at a park, still trying to find the right angles to shoot at.
My edits are a first too, just playing around with a few different themes.
would love some feedback! :)
all shot with 17-40

Ango, I think this would have been better using the dingy as the focal point and got up real close. But somehow managing to keep the background that you currently have there. I think this still works, but some tweaking could have made it really good.

Callan, are you shooting for 2020 yet? You should be! :D

Looks sweet mate, lighting looks awesome. Only thing for me would be that i'd like to see a little more of the bridge on the left to anchor the photo a little more.

Nice, althought the vignetting is very harsh, and the kid in the second shot distracts me a bit.
