-In order for someone to bother trying to hack your data, they have to give a shit about you. Sorry kids but hardly anyone cares about you as an individual.
Hackers won’t go after an individual, they’ll go for the whole database, which they may sell to the highest bidder. An individual may be impacted as a result of this.

My problem with the whole thing is sharing the information with the law. There are current laws that deal with this. I think it’s allowed in very special circumstances. This deal will let the law help themselves. This isn’t justified.

I've got a slightly different perspective on this. I'm an economist and deal with population level data day in and day out. For public health researchers and policy makers the my health data could be very valuable. Not in a 'lets screw them for more many way' more a 'if we provide universal childcare, kids will be smarter, better socialised and have better health across their lives'.

Regarding some of the common arguments:
-Insurers require you to disclose relevant medical history anyway. If you omit anything, your cover is withdrawn.
-In order for someone to bother trying to hack your data, they have to give a shit about you. Sorry kids but hardly anyone cares about you as an individual.
-The government will probably mishandle the data and the whole dataset will be corrupted/useless/whatever. Data is data, as long as the cockups are consistent you can still glean useful information from populations level data.
-It's a waste of money. I could talk all day about white elephants, this at least tries to do something useful.

A future employer might discriminate against you for a prior illness, when you do a medical you usually get sent to a health practitioner of their choice. Just say for instance you contracted a non life threatening STD at one stage of your life, they have this information and it may be used against you without you even knowing.

Oddjob

Merry fucking Xmas to you assholes

You have a lot more faith in HR professionals than I do. Most companies have a hard time doing an adequate educational attainment check, and thats directly relevant. Getting health records that are tangential seems like a long bow. Note: there is already mandatory self reporting for some jobs and some conditions eg epilepsy.

It’s the health and life insurance industry getting their hands on the data that is the real concern. These pricks cannot be trusted.

After the horror stories of Comm insure’s behaviour at the royal commission, give it a generation or two of staff turn over for things to return to the old ways, coupled with private medical records, that’s a disaster in the making.

Currently, if you’ve seen a mental health professional, and obtained a mental health care plan via your GP so the costs are on Medicare, the insurance company is going to pester the crap out of your GP if they get wind of this, using it to deny payouts. Currently the wise use two GP’s, and the one you nominate will report SFA.

If your medical records are obtained by private insurance companies, (do you trust future LNP governments?), you are fucked.

This is one that’s a real concern... Insurance companies are in the business of not paying of course and this is nasty one to use as a justification.

There are lots of good reasons healthy sane people need to see psychologists occasionally, which is why Medicare will chip in. Using that against you later is immoral at best :(

Mr Greenfield
Exactly. It took a huge effort for Greg Hunt to understand health professionals themselves need at times the services of mental health professionals without discrimination and the threat of license suspension.

Being state I'm not sure this is the thread but after being unable to decide if it was something I hated (human stupidity) or something I loved (Guy making himself look like an even bigger feacal stain) this is where I'm putting it.

The Liberals decided not to run a candidate in Richmond, The first thing Mathew Guy is going to do if elected is shut down the safe injecting room in, you guessed it, Richmond.

Which Richmond?

There is no shortage of stupid people in state level politics.
