Feelin' a bit rrranty
The mkV GTI is fantastic. With basic handling mods and a stage 1 tune (~190kw) they're an awesome car to drive. The DSG box is great, but yes expensive to fix if it fails. Regular maintenance and awareness of existence of any recall issues is usually enough to prevent large scale failures, though. That said, there are usually a few manuals around so that's always an option too.

Edit:

Also look at the Pirelli edition - it has the (bigger) K04 turbo same as the S3 and new Golf R giving it more stock power/torque (and more potential for tuning) along with nice cosmetic/styling touches like the colour coded valances and the Pirelli interior. Not sure where you're located but this'd be nice... http://www.carsales.com.au/private/... 1282 1216&silo=Stock&find=GTI Pirelli|CarAll

Cheers for the link mate…I’m in Sydney but it’s a good guide none the less!

Pretty set on DSG, personally I could go for manual but I’ll be sharing the car with the gf and she only drives auto, my compromise is we buy a car with a bit of power as I can’t stand drive auto cars that hardly move!

Preferably I want to find a car with low kms, full service history, extended factory warranty or some sort of ongoing warranty – just some sort of protection against any expensive DSG gearbox dramas!

my mum says im cool
It's funny how beautifully simple the DSG's are internally, yet so disgustingly expensive to get fixed at a audicorp dealer.

This is what scares me...I'm not sure if it's enough to scare me off though, if the car had some sort of warranty I would think it would cover any potential disasters wouldn't it?

Dutton Mark II, 1600 kent 'rally pack' (big valve head, etc.) Downdraft Weber, Lukey extractors, Mk1 Escort GT dash. 80odd hp and a tad over 600kg!

Trying to locate some period headrest-less bucket seats as the old Triumph seats were beyond repair.

I've got a DSG - it's been fine. My mate had his repaired under warranty and I've certainly heard stories about failures.

The only thing that really goes wrong with them is the mechatronic unit - a complex and unserviceable collection of electro-mechanical and hydraulic bits and bobs.

I think the part was about 4k from VW last I checked (a few years ago).

I reckon given the number of DSGs on the road that there may well be an aftermarket solution available soon at a lesser price (as in a reconditioned mechatronic unit).

And go to an independent specialist mechanic, the dealers can go and get fucked.

i knew u were , when i saw ya dh bike forsale on aristo forums ..
:( Didn't want to sell that, but of the V10 and my Torrent 3, the Torrent is the more useful bike over all. I'll get another DH bike eventually, but for now, need to finish that money sink Aristo. Finally ordered the lips for the wheels tonight so it'll soon have rims again. But.............. wider :)

Then just need to buy a fuel pump, install it, and install the cams, cam gears, injectors, haltech, etc. Thinking of running 25psi, so, should make some decent power at last.

Any VW nuts here?

I’ve been thinking about getting a new car (2[SUP]nd[/SUP] hand) – I like the VW Golf GTI, been scoping Mk V with DSG transmission, are these things reliable?

I can see a bucketload of dribble about DSG on the interweb, people bagging out the transmissions saying they are unreliable, but just as many other people say they are ok?

The look like great value, 08-09 for under $30k!
I owned one for a bit over a year. Sold it because I am going overseas. Seriously considering just buying another one when I get back.
Mine was a 2005 MKV with DSG. I put 30,000kms on it in 12 months, and besides the oil cap falling off one night (which I just screwed back on), it ran beautifully.
Servicing was cheap (~$400 for non-major, $800 for a major - independent), and the DSG certainly didn't have any problems. Considering it was dealing with 411nm of torque (chip since new in 2005), I was pretty amazed.

With a tune they also haul pretty hard for a (not so) little hatchback. Old mates in their VE SS-V Commodores really hate it when you walk them as they have their right foot welded to the loud pedal.
The power:weight ratio you can achieve for the cost of a software chip is pretty extroadinary, and having 411nm from 1800rpm makes for a lot of fun overtaking on highways.
Took corners quite nicely too. Not quite a Megane I am sure, but great in its own right.
It's just a very fun car, and they react well to being driven hard.
I had nothing but happy days with mine.

I knew quite a few other owners too, all with DSG gearboxes. No issues to report.
