The stupid questions thread.

Van this thing be mounted to an iscg05 and used with a normal bike? Or is it actually eeeeb specific? I'm chasing a cheap top guide. I'm sure I have 3 but fucked if I can find them.
Steps has a different bolt pattern to ISCG or ISCG5.

I had to cut the 3rd bolt hole off a bottom guide, do a bit of reaming with a dremel and make spacers to fit an ISCG5 to my Bosch.

Like we need more bolt patterns

Well that sucks. I finally find a chain guide that seems a fair price for such a simple and small piece of crap, and...well that is inconvenient.

Ali ?

I bought this one. Then cut the top guide and bash off to make it fit. I only needed the bottom pulley anyway as I already had a top guide.

There is no other place on the forum for this question..!

I was bleeding a set of brakes last night. The shimano mineral oil in them was grim! Anyway I grab my trusty spent oil jar and as I am about to pour the black filth in I see the oil (which hasn't been touched for quite a while) is clear and all the good has sunk to the bottom. Can this oil be filtered and reused? Can it be reused just from sitting long enough to clean itself? Or is it a case of once spent always spent? I have plenty of fresh shimano mineral oil, but one gets curious from time to time.

I don't think so, if its like cars then it absorbs water from the atmosphere over time and changes the boiling point.
Although I am not totally sure when it comes to MTB brakes and the braking force compared to that of a car.
I keep seeing videos pop up of Milk and other things used in place of brake fluid and most seem to do okay.

I do wonder if you could get a brake fluid checker from repco etc for a handful of dollars and if it would show up as 'bad' considering its such a small amount, maybe the time hasnt done it good. Would be interesting to hear your discoveries.

DOT fluid (glycol-based) absorbs water, mineral oil generally not.

best to decant the oil rather than filter.. probs ok :) (i mean you could do tests and such but...)

I've done the baby oil before in a pinch @danand it was geat. I was out of the authentic so loaded up my brakes and you couldn't tell. I did a few big long rides (sawmill in the Watagans for locals) and the brakes were as good as any other time.

I was thinking a filter like a commercial kitchen might run their fryer oil through. But a long sit then decant gently could work as well.

They do regenerate hydraulic oil on a professional level but I'm not sure what's involved. It costs a fair bit to do properly as it requires intensive testing.

does the oil in bike calipers even get that hot? (virtually no shear like is in hydraulic system)
not much in SDS that can easily test and little other data available... but not that critical? just separate the solids..

Yes it did. There's massive shortages due to drought in Spain. That doesn't explain why Cobram's has gone up 40% though the chunts.

Thank you. I was sure that I was picking up European oils for $7-10 on special last year. However I don't go through much because I cook for one, on the rare occasions I cook.
