About to book flights to Europe - anyone had a flight with Cathay Pacific recently? Good bad or about the same as the rest?

Not recently but flew with them a fair bit a few years ago and found they certainly made air travel less shit than usual. Wouldn't hesitate flying with them again.

Cheers, mixed reviews online but people are more likely to complain than compliment.

let you google that for me
I flew with CP to Australia from the UK a long time ago and they were shit.

Singapore Airlines are excellent though.

Had one a couple of years back. Definitely at the budget end of the international travel spectrum, but not significantly worse than any of the usual middle eastern carriers. By far and away my worse European flight experience has been with British Airways

Cheers. Singapore has very long stop overs in Singapore and with 3 kids might be a bit much.

Thanks. Emirates prices are cheap too but sitting in Melbourne airport for 4hrs and leaving at 2am doesn’t sound fun.

Singapore Air used to give you a free hotel in town for one leg if you took an extra long layover. Was quite handy when we flew with little ones.

Haven’t seen that offer on my endless searches. Looked at doing a stint in an airport hotel but would prefer to just get to the destination and start trying to shake the jet lag.

Oddjob

Merry fucking Xmas to you assholes

I actually find a 1-2 night layover in Bangkok, Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong to be more effective for jet lag than anything else. Hong Kong Disney is also on the Airport rail line. There is also a good outlet mall near the airport in Hong Kong.

Cathay had a rough COVID but we're traditionally the best with Singapore. Thai and China Airlines (actually a Taiwanese airline) are also very good. ANA and Japan air are also the gold standard but stopping in Haneda still means a longer leg to Europe than the other Asian stop overs.

I don't rate the middle eastern carriers. I particularly hate Dubai airport. Malaysia, Scoot, Air Asia etc are pretty shit. Avoid the mainland Chinese airlines.

Garuda has apparently been transformed with new management and a much needed aircraft refresh. I haven't tried it myself.

I also like Air NZ and Fiji Air although they won't be of much use to you. Very good options for the US though.

We had 9 hour stop over Singapore airport and stayed at Yotel (in the airport) and it was well worth it. We arrived in Europe in pretty good shape, even after a 14 hour flight from Singapore to Frankfurt.

On the way back we smashed both legs and we were fucked for a week!

How old are the kids? We did syndey-shanghai-paris return over Christmas with China eastern. They aren't overly flash but are cheap. They also do some stopovers of about 12 hours which was enough to jump on the maglev train (8mins to city) and spend a few hours in the city (there are short term visas from the airport if you fly from some airports including sydney). Had a good feed and the kids got to run around. Plus, they loved the 300kmph train

6,8,11 - older kids should be ok. Youngest will be um challenging. Few more options to look over. Cheers.
