personally, if i were shopping right now (i'm not - still a few months to go on my existing contract) i would probably get this: https://www.allphones.com.au/shop/outright_detail.asp?code=4030

...and then use it on a telstra BYO freedom 49 or something...
My current phone is the first one I've ever had on a plan, but I'm now finding it hard to justify buying a handset outright, and then going on a cap.

Contracts definately aren't my favourite thing, and I do like the idea of having an unbranded phone too, but the $800 purchase price would cover more than 10 months of contract payments at $60, so provided I can get through 14 months of the contract, I could pay out the remainder and still come out ahead.

If I was looking to go with a budget carrier like TPG or the like then it'd work out very differently, but I figure if I'm going to go with one of the big three, and pay 50-60 bucks a month anyway, I may as well let them subsidide some of my hardware.

After forever
I have a HTC Desire through Telstra.

Missus has an Iphone through Optus.

Coverage and web browsing far superior with Telstra.

The iphone is easier to use, more slick but just seems boring.
