Cool, thanks for the input guys, some good suggestions I hadn't thought of there. Yeah, I'm basically planning on being prepared for anything; including being smart and bailing out if necessary. Sounds like it's probably best to limit myself to daywalks in the Central Highlands. I reckon I'll hire a car for at least part of the time I'm there - just for the convenience of getting around.

i used to live in tassie... i would recommend wineglass bay at fracinate (sp?).
it is a beautiful beach with a nice walk.

Yeah the whole coles bay/freycinet(there's yr spelling) area is spectacular, and just north at friendly beaches is more than worth the look. Probably better in summer though, sick waves to be had too.
