Technically you have one arse and therefore any bikes over 1 are excess. But I say bugger that. I love building bikes. I’d love to have a small business building pump spec bikes but maybe that would then change the passion.
I’ve got 7. 2 DJ’s, an, ahem, road bike, a short travel trail bike, 2 enduros and a DH bike. Going to part with one shortly and it feels like I’ll be cutting off a limb.

3 covers all the bases for me.
Norco Optic - all mountain etc
Carbonda 936 - marathon / bike when I'm unfit
Cotic Solaris Max - hard tail MTB, then rigid MTB, now rigid roadie/commuter/bike packing. Selling to build a Carbonda 707.

Mr Greenfield
Peak was 16 I think. For just me, no one else in the family rides.

Down to 6 now. Unassembled frames and parts don’t count, that’s my defence and I’m sticking to it.

Drugs, gambling and many other vices are far more damaging…….but likely cheaper.

Having a variety of bikes is really important I feel to developing great handling skills. Ride only one type of geometry, and you become rigid in your style. Go from 70 degree XC bike without developing these skills to a 65 degree HA “slay everything” bike, you’re screwed, first corner you won’t have enough weight on the front wheel and you’re going down like a sack of shit.

Having a fleet of bikes that covers pretty much every “style” of geometry and bike category is great. You also realise being over biked is a thing. Tight twisty single track with no real elevation changes beyond a creek bed depression isn’t fun on that slack bike.

you can only ride one at a time so i'd say 3.

a primary a secondary and one to nag a girl your interested in to come on a ride with you than a different ride later on.

Start collecting your dream bikes from when you were a grom.. all of a sudden you need consecutive year models, matching paintjobs, one that your favorite rider was on for a season aaaand your shed is full..
Schwinn, Yeti, Intense, Foes and Orange have ended up as my main brands.
