Little Things You Hate

Merry fucking Xmas to you assholes
You never know until you give it a go.

When you realise the cost of getting a tiler in to tile your bathroom.... means you can buy all the tools and the tiles x 3 for the price he wants. Meaning you can fuck the complete job up 3 times.
Refer back to YouTube between fck ups and eventually it will right. You gain tools, job satisfaction, some DIY stoke and a new set of skills. No more tradies for tiling in this house

Before you know it you'll be doing roof restorations, gyprock'in and laying floors.
I don't know how you can be fucked doing that.

I've got no idea what value you put on your time, but if doing a job (probably poorly) 3x over, it's not nearly enough.

Obviously you're not going to fuck it up three times, but even if it takes you twice as long to do the work than a "professional", thats still a very decent dollar value on your time. Maybe you're paid more than me, but it ticks the boxes financially for me!

Plus its just very satisfying. Thats certainly worth something.

I'm not doing it poorly, I would say in 99% of jobs that I have done, the quality of the finished job and care that I put in is 10 times more than any tradesman you invite into you house would put in.

My time, I work 4 or 5 x 12hr (14hr) shifts in a row then get a full 7 days off. Every 35 day cycle I have 21 days off, 5-7-4-7-5-7 then start again.

I got plenty of time, just finished yesterday, 7 days off has commenced... now should I go riding today or head up to my shack this afternoon, riding and beer for 4 days.

The only shift pattern better than what I have now is retirement ;)

F'kin oath ! Best Hakkers reply ever :p

The fuzzy feeling of doing your own stuff, gaining tools, skills and some man stoke has no price.

Sitting on the sofa, twiddling your thumbs while some bloke crawls around on your roof cleaning your gutters for $250 is not a good feeling. Plus, you have been sitting there for 3 hrs waiting on him, coming to do the 1 hour job... what a shit feeling.

Same with cars. Just for an oil change yo could spend a couple of hours taking the car there, leaving it there, dealing without the car for the day, coming back to collect it and getting bent over financially - or spend 30 minutes with a beer break one lazy sunday afternoon.

I've spent over 10 years in formal tertiary education plus 20 years in my career. I've picked up a lot along the way. Even on my worst day I'm going to run circles around a rookie.

I suspect the same applies to most experienced mechanics/plumbers/electricians etc etc. That doesn't account for people being fucksticks and cutting corners on purpose, but if these tradies can dictate pricing, why would they bother?

When I take my car in for a service I'm not really paying for the labour on the oil change. I'm paying for the mechanic to apply their experience to pre-emptively look for problems. Admittedly this might not be the case at a dealer, but I use independent specialists.

Up to you mate. I like learning new things, a lot of it isn't rocket surgery and if you're thoughtful and careful and take your time you'll figure it out.

But we all have our priorities. I have some financial priorities so its worth it to me. And I have not been super impressed with the work of a lot of tradies on stuff that isn't about experience, its just stuff that required a little care and time.

My workbench project isn't the neatest thing in the world as I've sort of made it up as I went along, but its been very satisfying and will do the job nicely. If I did it again now it would be very neat indeed having learnt a couple of things along the way.

Just got a quote to put in an aggregate drain and seal the concrete brick wall. $10K including an up sell on a pit drain inside the shed (the point is stop water coming in...). Yeah nah... I'll get a bloke with a mini digger in to move the dirt for a few hundred, the rest I can do. I could do the mini digger myself, but the 1300kg of it on its (braked) trailer is a bit much for the Alfa and its not much cheaper. And i'll do better for sealing the wall than "install plastic sheeting" the $10K bloke wanted to do!

Well you would have come across a lot of people who who have also spent 10yrs in school, should be your equivalent, should be knowledgeable and should know what they are doing... then you think 'how does this chunt even find his way to work in the morning'

Same in every walk of like, there are good Tradesmen, shit Tradesmen, shit Barristers, shit Financial advisors, shit Engineers...

Just because someone has a piece of paper to say they are this and that, doesn't make them good at it.

Just hire the ute from Bunnings, then post us a picture :p
The nice neighbour up the other end had a bloke on a mini digger in who does good work, and 80 bucks an hour seems reasonable. Got him to have a look while he was here and scope out what trees i need to trim first for access etc, so that feels the easiest option. Was a few hundred for day to rent the digger anyway.

$80/hr is great, you get a good driver too. If its a job that can be done in one swoop and he's a neighbour, go for it.

We are on ex glacier country here, so all clay and boulders - watching this bloke pick up boulders, and move them around was very impressive!

Trentmoller was playing at a smallish theatre in Hobart, and it was going to be great. Now because too many (slow and slack) people bitched about missing out on tickets its been moved to a big shed on the wharf which will sound shit in comparison and have about a thousand more people crammed in. That really sucks...

I’ve always wanted a bobcat / mini digger - you should buy one and then rent out ….

only half joking .

I will have a lash at any job before paying someone to also have a half arsed go at it !
except electrickery , if it kills me , probably okay , but killing others inadvertently is not Kool

The mini digger does look like a lot of fun, I am still tempted!

I have to relocate some light switches and the 1960s wiring on this place is "interesting"... I can route the new cables and install the switches etc, but need some help in identifying the right cable to cut and extend amongst a big mess. Unlike a car, they are not colour coded and there is no wiring diagram!
