QLD Why isn't the Garmin 24hr being held this Year ?

The Full gas promotions website says there is no 24hr this year. Is another 24hr event likely to fill the vacuum now in Vic ?
Does anyone know why its not being held ?

Sure. While visiting home recently, Snozza's teamed up with a pair of penguins in Iceland to hold unicycle races on the same date.

Seriously, do we have to do this? Let's just leave it at "There will not be a Garmin 24 hour in 2012".

If you didn't want others to given an opinion, wouldn't it have been wiser to leave the topic alone ? Instead you felt it important to pipe up and tell us that you know the reason and give no further information. I assume this answer made you feel important.

24 hour racing

I would think for the progression of the sport
The opportunity to learn some of the perils of staging events such as a 24 hour event
Stopping unfair innuendo and speculation
Maintaining the integrity and being respectful to 24 hour mountain bikers and Rotorburners

That an explanation might be forthcoming.
Completely understand that personal tragedies need not be aired and respect this.

FGP seek assistance and support through Rotorburners forum for promotion and mutual benefits. This trust and respect is expected to be returned to the forum users from FGP, I say his because this thread has been started for exactly this reason - an expectation ...........

Alternatively wait for 2013 or band together and run our own "informal 24" - my back yard is not available (too small - wrong State.)

Can a group of Victorian clubs get together to run a 2012 24 hour event?

Is this a further indication of the competitive marketplace? BSC comes to mind ............
Ah did we export all our 24 entrants this year to Italy perhaps? :disillusionment:

Why should we leave it at that! A lot of us plan our whole season around this race. If there is a replacement race we need to know

Yep,
Its our MTB highlight of the year, and our team comes together from the around the east coast to attend. Surely its OK to ask the question ?
Is any other party likely to step in ?

24 hour

That is bullsh#t..... Get on to Forrest Mtb and get them to run it down there again, how about the southern exposure becoming a 24hr instead of a 12... Awesome trails for it!! Love the 24 in Vic and don't really want to travel interstate to ride with 20000 riders at the Scott in Canberra... What can we do??

No, because in this sport there are always people spreading BS rumours. The limit of the informations simply needs to be "it is what it is", and leave it at that.

I haven't spoken to Mick about the possibility of it, but I think you could be on to something - of all people in the state and sport, I think you might find him receptive to the idea. Maybe call and ask him. Planning a 24 hour at this late stage might be a bit too much (and SurfCoast's date is a bit close to other 24hr events), but for 2013, you never know. I can't think of a better person to run a 'replacement' event.

Maybe its the Kona 24 again instead of the Garmin 24??
hehe. No :)

Look, as a side point, the observant of you will notice there's already a stage race that's been slapped straight over top of the former Garmin 24 hour event date already (a few months ago). That kind of thing happening really doesn't help the financial viability of an event of the scale of the Garmin 24 hour. You've basically got two stage races two weeks back to back in Victoria.

Bright would be perfect for a 24. The 12 hour was brilliant. A great venue for the whole family.
But I love Forrest. Please please please please please...............

Forrest would be unlikely the weekend before the Forrest MTB festival. It would actually hurt the Forrest festival in future years if they ran a 24hr this yr and the 24hr moved somewhere else in the future.

Disappointed
Disappointed, that I know won't be able to turn myself in to a physical and mental fruitcake in a 24hr race this year.
Disappointed that I will have brand new dirty porn Rocky Mountain carbon Element 29er that is made for 24hr racing, not doing what it is designed to do, race.
Disappointed that FGP have decided that it isn't a financially viable event for them to undertake (just presuming), considering the role they have played over the last 10 yrs or so in promoting endurance mtb racing to the point where it is now where 24hr solo is racing for 24hrs by increasing the numbers of guys/girls having a go and becoming addicted to it.

Forest festival and the 12 apostles stage race are a big carrot now, maybe even Terra Australis, Gravity 12hr could even figure on the calendar now, then back up the next day on the way home and do the 6hr at Buxton as a recovery ride. Surfcoast 12hr is def on the calendar, Bindy and Mick do a great job down there at Anglesea.

The Southern Exposure have 3, 6, 12 Hr in their race already. Pretty easy to see what the next number in that series is. Also, the Gravity 12Hr at Bright could accommodate more riders - might need to address some road crossings in terms of the course (just going from memory here).

... What can we do??
Talk to the people who run the events. If you'll come, they'll build it (Field of Dreams in reverse...)

I would suggest contacting Mick Sheehan at the surfcoast 3, 6, 12 hour and ask the question, or Paul from the Rosewhite 12 hour.

As for Geelong, as a club we run 22 events a year not including state xc or hosting a national round. It's always the same handful of people putting there hands up to volunteer at the events (superstars - all of them), we discussed a 24 at a committee meeting not long ago and decided against it. There are logistical issues that make running an event of the potential size and length at the You Yangs, including camping and car parking.

Fair to say a GMBC 24 hour won't be happening this year.

how about Blores Hill for a 24 hour ???? Perfect match.

If I had to vote for a venue and a club that would do an awesome job it would be Blores Hill and the Gippsland crew.
The Blores hill track ( first ridden last year to huge praise )and the caravan park at the venue plus the community support that Gipplsand have seem like they could run an awesome event.

Personally i would not want to run a 24 hour race because I love sleeping.
