This is my old old school alloy Megatrail. Used to run 170/165 coil. A super fun and capable bike that was excellent at just about everything. The small wheels made it super agile. But after a couple of capable 29ers I couldn’t get away from the fact that despite the wheel size difference they were very similar in category.
I’d been eyeing off MattyP’s Optic for a while and thinking a short travel bike would be the go.
A cheap shock came up on Market place which gives it 145 rear travel and the frame also has secondary shock mount so it can reduce it to 135mm and also steepen the head angle and lift the bb if I’m feeling really sporty, and 20 minutes with the Mezzer had the travel reduced to 150 and there it was. A short travel ripper.
First ride out tomorrow. Hoping it’s not a short lived novelty and I use it on some more traily trails like Cascades etc.

Awesome update on a rad bike. Know what you mean about agility, I tried riding my Mojo like a big 29er on the weekend and almost cartwheeled through a couple of rock gardens - but then when the tracks got twistier it just went through corners like a slingshot with no effort at all. Little wheels definitely still have a place.

Yeah it goes alright! I took it on a 43km 1200vm ride yesterday to try it out. Went well! Im thinking I’ll raise the fork to 160 though. I don’t think it will lose any of its short travel character by giving it an extra 10mm in front. And will feel better as it just feels a tad low even with a riser bar and spacers.
Also for the second time since I’ve owned the bike I put it in the high position giving it only 135 travel. Felt great on the climbs up but absolutely horrible on anything pointing down.
Way too tall and ‘on’ the bike feeling so changed it straight back.
Whether I’ll keep it this way I don’t know. The original travel really didn’t give a lot up at all but I’ll stick with it for a bit.
