Have you considered picking a frame and getting a second shock with shorter e2e length but the same stroke? I'm considering a shorter e2e shock for my Reign that I can swap in and out for a day of shuttles to drop the BB and slacken the HA. Couple of hundred bucks from eBay US and bob's your uncle.
not as easy as it sounds
you have to consider the rear wheel hitting the seatpost, among other things

i have a Ibis Mojo HD
now in 160mm mode, with Float 36 160

you CAN get a shorter shock and forward mount (designed by Ibis) to run it with 140mm rear, if you were to run an adjustable fork you'd prod dump that down to 140/150 or so

i did have mine in 140 with some RS Revo's on it, i still have the option of running it like this if i do an epic day

great bike, i like it more every time i ride it

check this thread for heaps of pics
http://forums.mtbr.com/ibis/mojo-hd-picture-build-thread-603222.html

for a more economical option, Spesh Pitch, best out of the box hoon bike going

Scott Genius LT

Toying with the idea of selling my Blur LT and buying a more AM-orientated bike (I.e. 160mm travel fork, at least 6.5" rear travel). Very similar to the old Reign X stance. It seems Giant has dropped the X from it's range though?

Suggestions?
Everyone has thier own point of view but here's my 2 cents worth! Take a look at a Scott Genius LT. The suspension has a full lock out, half travel or full suspension mode which gives you 185mm of travel. I've seen some LT 40's around at the moment for $3500. [RRP is $4700] I've got an LT 20 & after owning 6 different bikes over the last 10 years can say that it's the best all rounder I've ever had. It climbs well and is heaps of fun coming back down the hill. They are not a featherweight at around 14kg's but still decent for a +7 inch bike.

Couldn't agree more with J Dog!

I have a 2011 Genius LT 30 and it is wicked! I've had 2 Giant Reign X's as well as a Reign 0 and they are fantastic bikes don't get me wrong, but I think for a proper AM rig the Genius takes the cake as it is soo adjustable with the suspension. It'll climb better than the X and descend better than a standard Reign.

Definitely go check out the bikes suggested in the flesh, see what feels nice when you sit on it and huck gutters and whatever else the stores let you do on them, you'll find the right rig

Considering just buying a Fox 36 or Lyrik coil/air and chucking it on the Blur.. I'm going to be out of pocket a fair bit if I sell it!

Right now i have a thing for the Meta AM ( i have a meta 5, sweet bike) the Yeti sb66 or Liteville 301.
For a cheaper bike off the shelf i think the Specialised pitch pro ticks the right boxes.
A mate has a Scott genius LT 10,20??? cant remember, but that seems very nice and he is lovin it.
The AM market is stacked right now so the decision wont be easy but you have plenty of choices, enjoy.
agreed! just ordered my Meta AM :)

Maybe not so much travel as you are looking for, but this bike is designed to be ridden DH aggressively.

Çommencal Meta SX
Absolutely an amazing bike, killer geometry, and spec for the price is competitive. Fingers crossed the "Better" Reverb post will be supplied OEM!
There will be a few of these (and also AM`s) running around in Cairns in the next couple of months.
Can`t wait to get mine!

I'm looking at a similar bike to whats being sought here (sorry about the thread started in General discussion)
I want something that definitely pedals well, and isn't too heavy, but will handle some sport DHing and jumping on occasions....something like I remember the old Patriots doing well....mmmmm, patriot...
Gotta say the Commencal meta looks the business. Wish I could afford even a SH Yeti or somethign higher end.

I'm returning to riding after a 7 year break. I used to ride mainly FR/DH, but groan trying to pedal my 'near new' 04 RMX, even with the 4kg of cobwebs and dust removed.

Keep the suggestions coming guys...even some of the 'left of centre' options :clap2:

I'll be selling my Enduro Pro soon...

Have a Specialized Enduro Pro 2010 which I love (my fourth Enduro over 12 years - best AM bike around IMO). Going to move to the new Enduro Expert Evo for a bit more travel without going the whole DH route. Will post the Enduro Pro in the for sale section next week so stay tuned.

I'll have to take that for a test ride...
The Rocky Mountians look great and rode well today, mind you the Reign and the Trek did too.
Gonna be time for me to upgrade soon.

I have the LT10 and its an awesome AM bike.. A little like 2 bikes in one with the twinlock feature it can go from 185 travel to 110 or full lockout front and back. It also has a adjustable front fork for for the climbs..

Weighs about 13kg.. equipped with X0 all round reverb seatpost..

Have a read.http://www.scott-sports.com/us_en/product/10840/55600/217962

Yep, Had the same dilemma as the OP. Wanted something that I could ride some more extreme XC style trails and some social DH shuttles.

The Slayer has it covered. 160mm 36 Fox float, 165mm rear with 66.5 HA that pedals like a Trance uphill and rides like my old A Line down.
Got a pretty good price for it, but I am supposed to say it was $3500 :tape:
Which year slayer did you get? got a pic?

Me and a mate picked up a couple of 2011 Slayer 50's. As stated, was looking for a bike that could ride up the hill comfortably as well as bomb down. Just got home from a road trip where we rode everything from techy XC with some climbs, to an AM epic with lots of hills and some crazy rocky sections going down, to the famous Kuranda Downhill.

Handled everything really well. Downhill on a bike that is 5-6kg lighter than my old downhill bike is so much more fun.

Slayer

I rode a slayer 70 this morning,
It felt sooooo good compared to my old '04 "All Mountain" bike.
Super stiff climbing, even stiffer with the pro pedal on and set to firm.
great geometry, felt very upright, and with the reverb post, you could put the seat down for the descents,
the relaxed head angle made sure it was comfy enough going down.
13kg's straight out of the box with room for more weight saving if needed.
I fully recommend one.

not quite 165mm rear travel, but I reckon the titus El Guapo is pretty hard to beat. You'd have to build one up yourself, and they are out of stock at the moment (due to come back in stock soon). Despite people hucking the crap out of them, the web-reported breakages could be counted on one hand, and they are close to the lightest aluminium frame in that travel range (<3kg for frame+shock, actual). Proper FSR suspension, not super plush kind of suspension, but more responsive, and a surprisingly good pedaller, super lateral stiffness. You'd need at least a fox36, no need for a talas, or a 170mm lyric if you wanted it a little slacker and higher. The bike is pretty low to the ground, so it corners and downhills like a champ, but you have a few pedal strikes until you get used to it. Despite the official spec HA of 68, it is definitely closer to 67 with the "standard" fox36. When they are back in stock, you are looking at about $1350-1400 to get a frame to oz with a standard monarch rt3 shock (get them separate to make sure you avoid customs/gst). If you wanna go more towards the downhill end of the spectrum, people are putting push'd monarch "plus" shocks on them, and 180mm fox forks. I've got one set up as an all rounder at 13.5kg with a float36 and push'd monarch rt3, including a joplin and decent tyres on it (about 1.8kg of tyres). they are due to come out with a 170mm version of it soon (a 2012 model), but I doubt they'll get the geo/stiffness/suspension recipe sorted as well as this did the current one, which is the last titus bike that CHris Cocallis had a hand in designing, before leaving and setting up pivot bikes.
