Recommend me an AM bike (160mm/6.5" - ish)

Toying with the idea of selling my Blur LT and buying a more AM-orientated bike (I.e. 160mm travel fork, at least 6.5" rear travel). Very similar to the old Reign X stance. It seems Giant has dropped the X from it's range though?

Suggestions?

What will it be for?

Mainly hitting gaps, jumps and DH? or you just want a softer trail bike?

The Trek scratch is plush and playful, and definitely worth a look. It's not going to compete with the Reign X on value though.

To me, the Blur LT already is an AM bike, but I spose it depends on what AM means to you.

Dirt mag did an awesome video bike check of some enduro racers. I'll see if I can find and linky.

Something that I can ride at Thredbo but still get around my local XC track. I bought the Blur with a primary focus on XC but very little on DH (Maybe 90/10 or 80/20 at best). I now am hoping to do maybe 50/50% split of both.

Yep, giant has dropped the reign x for Australian distribution in 2012. It really depends on your budget, there's a lot on offer.. but most of it is on the painful side of 4k.

Specialized have the Enduro and Enduro Evo. The Evo is more dh oriented with coil suspension.
Kona Coilair uses their magic link suspension design which lets the bike automatically change travel and geo.
As above, trek has a few bikes.

And then there's a whole bunch of bikes from the more boutique manufacturers. Santa Cruz, Yeti, Transition, Pivot etc. etc.

Also, hit up sethius on here about the new Dartmoor Wish, which is very price competitive and looks like a really good bike.

Aussie flavour. SP's are awesome. You should be able to land a test ride on one too. Deubel 2UP

Checkout the new Trek Slash.

Not out yet in Oz that i know of but looks mean.. I ride a remedy and ride everything on it. The slash is a slightly slacker and lower remedy from my understanding.. worth a look!

I'm keen on a bike that has adjustable HA through an adjustable link.. i.e. Coilair and whatever else is out there. I think anything else is probably either going to be "too steep" for DH and "too slack" for XC... Been there, done that :mmph:

IMO, the coilair with a 180 talas is probably the best do it all bike going. Drop it to 140mm at the front and the preload on the magiclink shock wound up nice and tight (keeping it at 120mm) and ride up big hills. Then wind the fork to 180 and the rear travel to 200mm and you've got a killer descender.

Right now i have a thing for the Meta AM ( i have a meta 5, sweet bike) the Yeti sb66 or Liteville 301.
For a cheaper bike off the shelf i think the Specialised pitch pro ticks the right boxes.
A mate has a Scott genius LT 10,20??? cant remember, but that seems very nice and he is lovin it.
The AM market is stacked right now so the decision wont be easy but you have plenty of choices, enjoy.

Transition Covert or a Rocky Mountain Slayer baby!
Yep, Had the same dilemma as the OP. Wanted something that I could ride some more extreme XC style trails and some social DH shuttles.

The Slayer has it covered. 160mm 36 Fox float, 165mm rear with 66.5 HA that pedals like a Trance uphill and rides like my old A Line down.
Got a pretty good price for it, but I am supposed to say it was $3500 :tape:

I'm also biased to the Covert - but the OP was after 165mm and the covert's only 150mm rear. And the Rocky looks good too

Have you considered picking a frame and getting a second shock with shorter e2e length but the same stroke? I'm considering a shorter e2e shock for my Reign that I can swap in and out for a day of shuttles to drop the BB and slacken the HA. Couple of hundred bucks from eBay US and bob's your uncle.
