Ha nope I've had quite a few of em 3.3l with current a last of the 4.2TI they are way tuff.
I used to do alot of proper 4wding years ago not so much now.

I think we may hijacked this thread sooo, I didn't see any ev charge points across the Simpson Desert 550km and 1,100 sand hills or fuel for that matter or even water points.

You would have to be nuts not to choose one of the EVs for around town. Short trips (<400km) maybe 50/50 or a bit better as long as there is electricity at the other end. Touring and camping out at the moment is a no. That is why I am waiting on a decent hybrid 4wd, that is a real 4wd and not some SUV etc. It will come but not sure full EV can work for bush camping for 2+ weeks remotely as we do. Having self sustaining camper is easy but the tractor not so much.

Umm wouldn't the mild or plug in hybrid swb defender with steel wheels etc be what you're after?

I'm pretty sure there is a mild hybrid g wagon now as well.

Nothing Indian, there you go. Have you sat in one? And under $100k.

As a former Land Rover owner (Mum still has one), there is no way I would trust Land Rover Australia to keep any modern Land Rover running...
True dat, which is why I have an independent specialist.

When Toyota get around to releasing a hybrid Land cruiser it is going to cost a freaking fortune. A bit like the current G wagon.

You can get a Defender 90 now for ~100k, avoid the dealer workshop and if it's not up to your expectations sell it before the warranty runs out. Maybe just maybe the Land cruiser hybrid might be out by then.

Im not buying their claims....

I do see the issues with battery technology with heavy equipment, when it comes to charge times, run times, charging vs battery swaps. There is also the legacy engine manufacturing infrastructure that all the OMEs will want to keep going so that would be a factor in the big push to go hydrogen.
When I was working for Caterpillar, they went the battery route for their underground loaders but with the current battery technology the machines are still far away from getting a workable runtime and it involves large investment in the charging infrastructure in each mine.

There may indeed be a niche application for heavy plant where the MASSIVE cost penalty of using hydrogen in an inefficient ICE is outweighed by recharge times.

But I doubt they go for long between refuelling - they neglected to say how many KGs of H2 they're carrying!

A truck burning H2 (as opposed to a MUCH more efficient fuel cell) will have a very shit range, waaaay worse than a BEV.

Would that hold true if they're carrying the fuel in liquid form? I thought that would have a fairly large range...?

The problem with hydrogen it the density. In gas form it needs huge tanks in liquid form it needs to be super cooled and insulated and that also takes up a lot of space.

M539 Restorations got one of those hydrogen V12 engines to use in his 850i restoration. Low kms and super clean inside from running on H2!

All good, I'll have a watch of the vids later on. A lot of the truck manufacturers a still pushing pretty hard to develop hydrogen powered vehicles for mass market delivery. Always seemed like a weird choice to me, but they keep going so was trying to work out what the appeal is for them.

Got to drive this Polestar 2 today for a mate doing a photo shoot. Goes good. Dual motor, fastest car I've ever driven.

I've always liked a roomy cabin with plenty of glass so slab sided high doors with small windows felt cramped.

Best description is effortless driving. Was a lot of fun, had a couple of road workers flag us down at their stop/slow to ask what it was.

I do like the way they look, just a shame its a pretty derivative ICE based platform and some "cost effective" engineering for suspension etc...

There is no way I'm spending a hundred grand on ANY vehicle let alone an enthusiastically overpriced 2 door Land Rover. As it is...my mother has said we can have her D4 when she's done with it. Neither of us is convinced even that is a good deal!!
