29er Tyre Thread

I've got ardent race front and rear at the moment and really like them.

Used to have ralph/Nic, much prefer the ardent race. Find the rear doesn't slide as much when the trail is really wet.

I'm far from a racer though!
Thinking of ditching the Nics (Schwalbe absolutely sucks arse) and going back to the Ardent. Are you running tubeless and if so, are your Ardents LUST?

Current nics are huge improvement over earlier (squirmy) version.
In my experience they're utter shit. I had no issues with the first pair I had; the second pair (current version), somewhat the opposite. More than happy with the tread/grip however the pieces of shit keep blowing off the rims. Schwalbe's response was - to say the least - as utterly shit as the ability of their tires to remain on the rim. They won't ever get another cent out of me.

I came from ground control front and fast track rear.

I really like the Ardent race front for sure. It is meaty enough without being cumbersome in the rolling resistance department. Hooks up well enough for my slow speeds. Was toying with throwing an ikon on the back but given I'm not near the pointy end I'll take the little bit of extra grip and comfort on my hardtail.

Did you ever try the GC on the rear? I'm just curious because that's what I'm running now (29x2.3) and so far it's my favourite rear tyre, but next up I'm trying an ardent race. How do you think they compare??

A (very) old snakeskin thunderburt held up for 4 laps of the Scott course at Stromlo + a run down Pork Belly/DD on the weekend.
I still don't understand the general consensus that Schwalbe tyres don't last.

I did however notice that a bald thunder burt isn't great in the dry sandy stromlo conditions, though it was great for drifting like a 16yo in a sylvia.

Still grips well on hardpack and outcrops though

I haven't been running tubeless, but trying to set the up at the moment. Just got my hands on a container of stans, got my rims taped up (rather suspect job I did...) and will try this weekend to get them going!

They are not LUST versions.

I've also just got 2 ardents 2.25 (non race) to try out on my single speed. It currently has XR2 experts on it that are ok in dry on hard pack but like skating on ice over any kind of roots or mud. Also hoping it allows me to get more rear wheel traction when going up steepish things. Although body position probably has more to do with it.

Might be more tyre than I need but they were $42 from pushys so I'll give them a crack.

Just a bit of info for this thread.

Pushys have the 29+ 120TPI EXO tubeless ready for $44.99 (was $39.99 for 2 last week)
http://www.pushys.com.au/maxxis-chronicle-29x3-00-exo-tr-folding-mtb-tyre.html

Yet the normal 29+ 120TPI EXO are $108 each ???
http://www.pushys.com.au/maxxis-chronicle-29x30-exo-folding-mtb-tyre.html

The normal EXO have a 5g weight penalty too, seems like a pricing mistake... but they are sending out the TR for the cheap price. http://www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-495-chronicle

Use these codes for a discount too...

$10 off $100+ "rtmn1"
$20 off $150+ "rtmn2"

Built a set of 29+ wheels for my fatbike this morning... was fat, 90mm rims with 4.8" removed to fit these.

What are you looking for, low rolling resistance, big grip, or a middle ground? I’m guessing that you want it to work on hard pack and /or loose over hard pack.

To get the ball rolling……..

Low rolling resistance: 2.35 Ikon – huge bag for some squish on the HT, rolls well, and grips ok up until the point of lock up, when it locks it just slides across the surface and does offer much retardation;

Big grip: Minion DHF – rolls quite well for big grip tyre and the weight isn’t that noticeable. Yes it’s an extreme option but damn it works on the front;

Middle ground: HD Pacestar – good grip (it’s never going to be the DHF) and rolls quite well (it rolls about the same as the old NN);

There are heaps of tyres out there and this thread will no doubt have people liking every option under the sun – it’s all about personal preference.

Rode the Youies today with Onza Canis and they were crap. The knobs are too vacant.
Have been using Specialised Purgatory front and Captain rear and while they are slow and heavy they grip really well.
Thinking a fast multiknobber like a Racing Ralph, Ikon, Thunder Pants out back with Ardent race, Hans D or snobby Nic up front. Want something light- set and forget for summer

Nobby Nic on the front is around 100g lighter than the HD, the HD seems to have noticeably better grip, but the grip will go off after a 1000km or so(like all tyres do) Haven't ridden an ardent race, but gee they don't have much on the way of knobs - would work on buff single track, but always considered them equivalent of the racing Ralph.

did you have any problems setting these up tubeless?
No problems on a range of rims from Stans Crest to BC Tammar, the Protection sidewalls are good, I do clean the inside of the tyre with wax and grease remover prior to mounting to remove mold release, I do this with most tyres.

Nics squirm a lot, but I can loan you a half worn one if you want to try one. Good winter front tyre.

So a NN on my he front and a Racing R on the rear would be a great summer allrounder combo you think?
It's for a HT

Yes, and for winter you can put your slightly worn Nobby Nic on the rear and buy a hains dampf for the front for winter (at least that's the theory )

How are you finding the TB for casing stability over time? I've started running one out the back and am most impressed but often find that Schwalbe casings deform over time and the sodding things begin to wobble. It'd shit me if this one went the same way.

For instance, have just killed a basic and barely worn RR on the CX casing (700x35) after running/crashing at low pressure. And now the thing won't sit square on the wheel for love, money or potentially explosive air pressures. Now waiting for a Challenge Gravel Grinder 700x38...

Had the same issue with other Schwalbe 29er casings using NN and RR patterns in the past...though none have been the highly technical carcasses from memory.
