29er Tyre Thread

Glueless tube patches, was just a temp fix, took it off today and adjusted presure, sealant has sealed the hole again.

But if you need to get home, it did the job!
Hey Cam, I wouldn't rely on sealant keeping that hole closed. In my experience, particularly with thin wall tyres like the TBs, flex in the sidewall will open the cut right back up. I would patch it on the inside if you intend to keep using it.

Thanks for the heads up, what patches would you suggest to use on the inside ?

Clean the inside of the nick with isopropyl and patch the hole with a small piece of gorilla tape...

I always look in on this thread...lots of XC tires..
Just fitted up a Magic Mary(F) and Minion DHF(R) combo for Buller Enduro on my 29er, although the weather forecast I might need some ice spikes.

Does this work long term? I put a decent hole in a brand new ikon last week and have been getting all depressed about having to continue using a tube.

I'd tend to use a proper tube patch rather than gorilla tape. With sidewall flex I'd expect sealant to eventually get under gorilla tape and then it will fall off at some stage, exposing the original holes.

I've found if you do a really good job of cleaning the tyre (isopropyl rather than any other white spirit actually makes a difference here) and then you use a good sized square of the thick roll of gorilla then I've had it hold for months with ikons, ignitors and burts.
If and when the sealant does get under, it does so slowly enough to patch the leak pretty well...
I've found patches to drop off.
Some people even sew the hole shut first with fishing wire or even dental floss to stop gaping.
Neither solution holds well if the hole gapes open.

Maxxis treadlites are on and one ride down. They measured up at 2.01" on crests (so what was on the box). As you'd expect for something which looks like a low profile rock razor, they certainly require a level of confidence leaning your bike over but bite once it's got a heavy lean on. I could only try them out briefly on the dirt but I'm hoping to get a good ride in at Majura on Sunday to put them through their paces a bit more. Certainly not a tyre for wet conditions though, you'll be on a fully slick before you know it.

Chunky but funky

Change over for winter months

Trying Specialised ground control rear and purgatory front in 2.3

Need more bite- will let you know how they go- review.

Had a Schwalbe rocket Ron on the front- way too soft side knobs. Onza Canis have been super over summer- highly recommended.

Treadlites drift. A lot. I'm yet to race them on moister stuff, but on the gravel at Bruce Ridge I spent a lot of time with minimal control of the rear of my bike. It was AWESOME.

Ended up with ardent race front and rear for xc trail duties - really liking it so far...
Any further updates?

I've given up on Specialized Fast Traks Controls with my current set already weeping through the sidewalls, both front and rear. This set can't have done anywhere near 500km, and I think i'm up to tyre number 4 and 5 with the same issue. The update from a few years back has really hampered these =/

Think i'll invesigate the Ardent Race front, and the Ikon rear. I thought about the ikon up the front too, but it feels like a slightly less aggressive tyre than the Fast Trak.

I came from ground control front and fast track rear.

I really like the Ardent race front for sure. It is meaty enough without being cumbersome in the rolling resistance department. Hooks up well enough for my slow speeds. Was toying with throwing an ikon on the back but given I'm not near the pointy end I'll take the little bit of extra grip and comfort on my hardtail.

Thanks for the update - Are you running the EXO versions? I wonder if I could get away with the lighter non-EXO on the front.. it's quite a jump in weight from the Fast Trak!

Definetly exo I'm 105kg so every little stick and rock becomes a sharp tyre cutting implement

Do you rate Rocket Rons for winter. Front and rear. They are light- well spaces and good volume but my only concern is their soft side knobs. As with most Schwalbe tyres I have found the side knobs tend to roll on smooth rock and even tear off in the past. I just can't help but love their weight and be dazzled by this.

RORO are good on the front but not sure on the rear.

If maxxis had ever made a 2.35 29" ignitor then I think you'd be on a winner

I've got ardent race front and rear at the moment and really like them.

Used to have ralph/Nic, much prefer the ardent race. Find the rear doesn't slide as much when the trail is really wet.

I'm far from a racer though!
