Prices in 06 will be lowered as more people buying bikes to commute due to higher fuel prices, thus making parts more commercialised and affordable?

Personally I doubt the effects of increased demand (due to high fuel costs) will outweigh the effects of increased raw materials costs in asia.. Dont know the exact stats, but some materials have almost doubled in price in 2005 (from memory).

The demographic who convert across from driving to cycling to save money will not be the types of people to go out and buy a Team DH, or even a $1000 hardtail IMO. If their motivation is cost, they will buy cheap commuters, or use bikes they already have or can borrow.

My 0.02 cents.

You are right DHfast, I still think it may bring higher end bikes down just a tad, nothing really noticeable...We'll just have to wait till next year and find out. You have to consider...to get bikes to the distributors/shops, they are transported...which uses fuel which may push up the cost of bikes!

Most of the poulation will just be wiser when driving their cars...don't use them for short trips, ease off the harsh acceleration/braking, downsize to a more economical car? Maybe even buy a scooter/moped?

fossil fuels

Manufacturing of most products these days requires fossil fuels in some shape or form.

Increase in these costs may increase cost in bikes.

I doubt prices of bikes will drop much, they may drop a little bit, but i doubt they would because of fuel.

Think about it, if you where a big bike name (e.g Santacruz, Orange, GT, Specialised, Giant, Norco, Kona, ect.) would you even CARE what fuel prices would be doing? I dont think major company's would lower there income just so people dont have to pay so much to fuel up there cars.

As a person mentioned in this post, nearly every single person has an old bike, and i dont see why they would go out and buy a expensive Off road bike. (to the public over $1000 is very expensive for a bicycle)

So no i dont reckon they will drop in prices due to the fuel crisis.

Just my thoughts.

Where do you think plastic comes from....oil, so that means for all plastic and even carbon, not 100% sure, but this will coast more for companys, meaning bike and bike parts made from plastics will increase, cause bikes overall to be more expensive.

steel

to form steel and aluminium you need heat, you need chemicals, you need a whole lot of stuff. A lot of this "stuff' has a base in petrochemicals.

Even toothpaste prices "could" be effected by fuel cost increase.

they are just trying to wring the last little bit out of the planet.

How about these little items?

Rubber for tires
Grease for bearings
(if you have v brakes) pads.
Oil for shocks (synthetic oils need energy to be produced)
How does your bike get into the country? Plane, boat.
Cable outers.
Cables.
chain lube
and i am sure we could go on and on.

Price hikes might not happen for a long time, but the prices for almost all consumables could go up in the future.

Hell, the keyboard you are typing on is petro chemical based.

Every part will get more expensive to manufacture, as fossil fuels are behind every step of the process, from coal to power electrical generation to the heavy fuel oil ships burn to cart the raw materials around....

Fuel crises make EVERYTHING more expensive, maybe not initially, but mark my word...
