Which do-it-all bike? orange/santa cruz/specialized

For anyone still watching, I tried a medium 06 Enduro expert with fox 26s, best bike I've ridden so far. Although it was heavier (apparently) than the reign 3 I tried this morning the bike felt much more alive and responsive, not sure the finances will stretch that for, or more so whether the g/f will allow them to stretch that far ;)

A couple more test rides tomorrow morning and then I'll have to decide

Hey Gothikon - 36 Talas RC2's / DHXair-5 / Juicy 7 on that test bike ? Doesn't get much better. We [ 3 of us] reckon they are the best bikes we've ever had - you won't be sorry! Sell the GF's cat or something...

For what you are doing my best guess would be the Santa Cool Nomad.
My mate has one with Dh spec on it. They are fantastic bikes, the angles are spot on and it is very light(compared to other dh bikes).
If I had to choose a bike suitable for freeride, downhill, dirt jumps, 4 cross, cross country, enduro and even street, it would be the nomad.

But as you said, if you want a 'dual suspension chameleon', get a blur 4x. From what I heard they are as snappy has a hardtail, but you cna throw them around due to the amount of travel....

either way, get a santa cruz...

Very long term g/f so do need to try and get hit past her *although* when I came home and told her that the Enduro was frickin awesome she was like, "Why are you telling me, you're going to buy something way too expensive anyway..."

Can't sell the cat's either, too cute, and I did by them for her;)

I've been thinking about the Santa Cruz bikes some more though, and as much as I would love a Nomad or Blur 4x I don't think I'll be able to get one for under 5k and the budget isn't going to go much further, I haven't seen any good second hand deals on the blur 4x or nomad. The heckler still looks like a pretty sweet deal but I'm really not sure about buying it without trying it before hand. Especially considering the mixed results I've had with various bikes so far... I'm sure it's an awesome bike but I just don't think I can take the risk, however much I want to be a Santa Cruz whore! Having said that I'm beginning to think the first test rides (Kona Dawg and a couple of others) may have been such duds because we didn't take the time to make sure they were setup for my weight. Both the Enduro and Reign tests were much nicer and both were setup for my properlly.

If the Enduro had been a tad cheaper I would have bought it on the spot though! The things that's annoying is I have seen a few 06 Enduros with the Fox 36 for closer to 4k than the one i rode today but places seem to be running out of stock fast... The crazy thing is if you put a Fox 36 on the Chameleon it would be the same price as the Enduro on sale!

Anyway, more test rides in the morning, going to try a Kona Coiler properlly set up for my weight and probably a canondale prophet. If both those rides go well, and it turns out the bad rides I had were mainly down to poor setup I might be able to get over my fear of buying the Nomad without a test ride..

<sigh> It was *so* much easier buying the Chameleon. hard tail = SC Chameleon + fox fork + Avid Juicy discs, it was the only way to go! If I ever find the #$&*$$ who knicked it...

hey mate,

my mate got his Nomad with DHX5.0 air, avid juicy 7, fox 36rc2, sram x.9, hadley hubs, chris king, mavic rims etc etc for about 6 grand(aus) I think it was. Im pretty sure it was from overseas. Ill try get the site where he got the bike off. Im sure with a enduro/dh/fr spec would be cheaper than a full on hardcore DH spec.

Alright, just tried a Cannondale Prophet and a Mongoose Tecolai something or other... Neither was a particularly inspring ride and we did play with the shock setups a bit, so of all the bikes I've ridden if I was going to buy a full suss I'd take the Enduro. I'm deffinetly not prepared to buy without a test ride after today.

The cannodale felt like an XC bike with a "soft" rear end, didn't give me any troubles pedalling seated or otherwise.

The Tecolai was a bit meh, had the travel but had no life.

The Giant deffinetly seemed to lock out completely when you pedal hard and very active when you needed it. If I wanted more of an XC bike it'd probably be the one.

The Enduro was lively, probably not as pedal efficient as the others but on paper probably the heaviest, but if that's the case I had to much fun to notice. The Enduro just made me want to get out and ride, just like the Chameleon. To be fair it may have been a slightly better spec. Unfortunately it was also the most expensive...

Interestingly, I've never been that great at bunny hopping but I found it pretty easy to get both wheels off the ground and far easier than on any of the other full suss bikes...

None of the suspension designs really gave me any issues as far as pedalling was concerned, sure there was a difference, but the way all the bike mags make it sound you'd think it was a life or death issue. With so many variables between the bikes i tried it's hard to say what it was that made the Enduro feel so right, suspension design must have played a part in it but it's more complicated than that. I don't think you could ever choose a full suss bike going from the spec on paper.

Anyway, I need to make a decision in the next few days, if I'm completely honest with myself I don't think I'm going to use the the Enduro to it's full potential with my schedule the way it is at the moment, however much I want to.

But I think price is going to be the decider. With my latest quotes the Chameleon is coming in at 1k less than the Enduro with a comparable spec in terms of quality and durability, it's also got the Santa Cruz bling/bike porn factor :D :D But I'm going to ring around a few more places and see if I can get a better price on the Enduro before I put down any money.

Anyway, at this stage I know whichever way I go it'll be a really nice bike and the best I can afford in either category.

It must sound crazy that I'm now comparing these two bikes.. But living and working near the CBD 80% of my riding will always be in the city and I'm not sure I can justify the extra cash when it's only going to make a difference 20% of the time, however big that difference is, I'm sure a lot of people are in the same situation. I'll be just as happy getting in to more street and learning a few new tricks as I would getting out in the country. Even in the country the Chameleon will be a sweet ride, just without the comfort or the confidence to go quite as big as you get from having 5-6" of rear suspension ;)

When I think about some of the rides I did on my first proper mountain bike, a 30 lb Shimano ST spec steel rigid, with a 20" frame. I rode up a pretty massive hill near my parents, took about well over 4 hours to get to the with a pretty harsh half hour long descent on the other side... I kept having to stop because the momentum I was building up from all the step downs was insane, and the canti break really weren't up to the job  Hard tails are still pretty awesome bikes.

Merry fucking Xmas to you assholes
I understand where you are coming from with the Enduro but I think you should make an effort to try out a Heckler. They really are amazing bikes and you will probably feel right at home on one given your previous chameleon. The fact that Neezy are selling some cheap is nothing to be sneezed at either.

If getting a test ride is a problem from BSC ask around Farkin and see if anyone will give you a test ride.

Have to completely agree with Oddjob here, you need to try a Heckler before dropping 5 big ones on an Enduro or another Chameleon. If you are worried an enduro might not get fully used and you loved your chameleon then it would be crime to buy before trying a Heckler. It would be a great combo of them both, burly all mtn duallie that's a bit lighter than an Enduro with SC geo.

Gah, guys!

I'd convinced myself I was going to go with another Chameleon after not finding any better deals on the Enduro today.

My reason being that as much as I want to go full suss with the Enduro i don't *have* to, the Chameleon is cheaper and I can pay cash, even if I got a full suss I would still want to have a Chameleon around aswell, and lastly that by the time I can afford to have two bikes (not in the next 12 months) there will be much better bikes on the market than there are now. The Chameleon is a bit more of a classic and less likey to get superceeded the way the Heckler and Enduro will (full suss bikes seems to be improving faster than hard tails).

I was all ready to down and by the Chameleon tomorrow afternoon.  I think I still am.

My biggest mistake was still not trying the Nomads and patriots when I was at glentress, they had ex-demo nomads for <5k AU.

It's done, I went with another Chameleon in the end. I got a good price and some nice parts. Will post pics when I get it, should be in about 2-3 weeks. So it's not a full suss but it's still an awesome bike and after test riding so many other bikes I know i'll still be more than happy with it.

I'll get a full suss another day;)

always room for another bike

What is the rule of thumb?

Something like.

The number of bikes that a cyclist requires

N+1

where N = the number of bikes that you currently own!
