Um - was some time ago now, but Nikon D3, single manual-set on-camera flash (Nikon SB800) set to (probably) 1/2 power, manual exposure (guessing about 1/1000, f/4) and FP synch.Geez, that's some seriously good lighting you got going in that second shot - what'd that take, three remote flashes and a few tents?
But no, seriously - remote flash on that one? Light source doesn't appear to be coming from head on.
The 'trick' (I don't know 'tricks' - just read Strobist blog) is to balance ambient with flash to get softish shadows - make it look like one big light source - it helps that the ambient was a bit 'grey' (bit of cloud cover to the right of shot) that helped to fill with ambient... and that's about it. Oh, and angle of flash to sun about 75 degrees so no edgy shadows - hence it does look a bit like tent.
