Street price for a 29'er Specialized Epic Expert Carbon?

Can I please get an idea for the street price for a 29'er Specialized Epic Expert Carbon?

I almost picked on of these up when I was in the US last week. The negotiated price was around US $ 4500...but I decided it was better to wait (didn't want to own on of the first ones out of the factory, in case of some warranty issues.)

http://www.specialized.com/au/gb/bc/SBCProduct.jsp?spid=52786&scid=1000&scname=Mountain

Now back home I see that the local Specialized website has them RRP AU $ 6,000...but sure there must be some 'discounting' going on at that level?

If the price is right (And it should be with the strong dollar), I'd rather support the local LBS and get proper warranty support.

Thank you in advance.

Ive been told at my LBS that there's no wriggle room whatsoever as they are just rolling out 2011 stock. Whatever price you see on the net is going to be what they sell it for I'm afraid. :(

... and to just add to that. The stock they bought from Specialized happenned when the dollar was at it's usual 80ish cent bracket so even though the dollar is strong now, they will still sell at the retail price.

Its the same across the whole range. I was pricing around on a Stumpy 29er FSR Comp and the price was identical at 4 diferent shops across Sydney.

I know of 2 guys, both on this forum, who got cracking deals on 2011 stumpy's and one is a really rare one. Maybe the 29er's are a bit harder to haggle on but I would think you could get a decent deal somewhere.
Cheers.

I am sure there is room to move on the price.

Look what happens at the end of the model year when they discount them. Surely they are still making money.

I suppose it depends on what shop you go to. I went into a high profile Specialized shop in Melbourne with cash in pocket to buy, and the guy wouldn't even knock $50 off the price.

So I walked out and bought another brand of bike.

You found a bike you wanted, went to buy it, the salesman wouldn't give you a discount that was not even significant, and you left?

It seems that buying a bicycle is now not about finding something you like and buying it, but about having one's ego stroked by the salesmen by discounting stuff on account of how special you are. It all comes across as pretty insecure, really.

No, I don't have a bike shop. I've just seen conversation among mountain bikers, online and off, move away from gear, rides etc and more and more to how cheap stuff can be bought. There's fun in the chase of a good deal, but it seems that riders are making huge compromises and becoming very blinkered in how they approach the purchase of a bike product.

It's frustrating to watch riders buying stuff with a shrewdness as though they were buying their weekly groceries, when they're really buying toys for themselves - which should surely be a gleeful experience.

Damn, if you're dropping $6k a week on groceries I wanna come live at your place!

But seriously $6k for a bike and the guy won't budge $50, I'd be walking out too and finding someone that will or finding a way to buy OS and bringing it in

I second that !

My advise is do your research before you go to your LBS ( Bike Exchange ) For a start maybe even call a few dealers from bike exchange for a good price (Even call interstate less overheads ) before you go to your LBS for price matching !

Not really, I was in Melbourne and wanted to buy, he wouldn't take what I offered so I waited and bought the same bike from my LBS when I got back to NSW.

I suppose you pay full price everything because your not special?

That's not what you said before. Didn't you say you bought a different brand of bike? And to be honest if you're dropping $6k on a bike why haggle over $50. Seems petty to me.

There is a SPech dealer in this city that has the most defunct CS l have ever seen. If it was one occasion l could accept it but every single time......... holy crapper. Now l actually like many of Specialised products but l would never purchase one of their frames again. CS is absolutely vital especially when you are throwing down big cash.
Joel - with all due respect - if someone asks for a discount in todays economic climate when purchasing a 6 grand bike then l wouldn't consider it insecure. Specialised are renowned for not budging on price until they have a sale / garage sale / clearance / warehouse sale or end of season sale - and then suddenly there is heaps of room to move on price. Now please dont tell me that they have no room on the bike or couldn't at least offer a discount on spares, tyres, accessories even a hug would be nice. Is it because Specialised believe they have a monopoly, price fixing, all in it together - biggest company in the world - $50 bucks off - should l drop to my knees.
Customer service is paramount for a sustainable and successful business. Yes if a customer walks into a bike shop - they are special and the employees of that bike shop are there to serve the needs of the customer on behalf of the owner. Bike store employees are there to sell bikes, give advice based on experience and knowledge, and to offer exceptional CS. If l walk into a cafe and the service is bad - l will leave. It is a service industry (not sub-servant) and the best CS wins out every time for me.
One store gets all my funds not because they give me a discount but because their CS is great and they generally give a damn about me and my bikes - they want the best for me.

There's fun in the chase of a good deal, but it seems that riders are making huge compromises and becoming very blinkered in how they approach the purchase of a bike product.

Hell l encourage shrewdness Joel - it is a truck load of bicycle/$$$. Anyone that doesnt sweat a purchase like that is either filthy rich or knows exactly what they want and have researched the options - focused. It is often not a gleeful experience because it is so much money and fear creaps in - have l made the right choose, would a four grand bike have served me just as well, what is the CS like with this brand, can l afford it? All normal thought processes for individuals. The OP who didn't get the discount was probably more pissed off by the poor CS than the lack of discount.

Sometimes l see CS that make me feel like l am an imposition (bigger than Jesus)to the employee, that my questions are dismissed and that we are wasting their precious time. It is so easy to make someone feel special and to offer great CS -skills that are often lacking.

Just my thoughts

Oh yeah your right, I got my bike buying mixed up. I bought the same bike later on.

So what bike shop do you own?

And I shouldn't have bothered replying as JD summed it up quite well in his post.

I don't own a bike shop (and I have no idea what that's got to do with it even if i did). I hope you had heaps of fun with $50 you saved - you must be so proud

... and did you actually buy the bike? Do you buy multiple bikes? Or is yours just a BS post to begin with?

I have bought lots of bikes and plan on buying more. Probably buy a new one every 12-18mths.

$50 in my pocket is better than $50 in someone else's.

... and you haggle over $50 yet have thousands upon thousands to spend on new bikes.

Right I get it.

Well enjoy that pizza and bottle of wine or whatever it is you spent that super dooper saving on. You must be very proud.
