im getting a stem (not decided what sort yet) for my gt dhi. the question is that which would be more suited to downhill a 30mm stem or a 50mm stem. i have herd friends say that 50 would be better but on my old bike (03 norco atomik) i had a 50mm and i changed down to a 30mm and it felt way better... any thoughts?

I just went down to a 30mm stem from a 50mm on a DHR208.
Very happy with the choice.

Bike feels a lot more nimble and is a lot faster in tight switch backs when racing.

On pedally race tracks, it's easier to get a bit more power down with the longer stem however, and high speed stability is less compromised.

Keep in mind your frame size as well. If you have long legs and are already riding a smallish DH bike, it's easier to clip your bulky kneepads on the bars when sprinting if you go too short, but 30mm should be fine.
