Putting new bike in storage for 3 years?

Hi all,
I ended up pulling the pin on a Giant Trance X Advance Pro 2 for $3,999 and am due to collect it this week.
Lo and behold a Parktool spanner has been thrown into the works where on opportunity to go away for work for a few years has come up.
I’ve spoken to the bike shop who have been great and happy to cancel my order. Giant has sold out now so they said they will sell it in a heart beat.
No point taking the bike with me as it won’t get used.
I’m thinking of whether I’m best off still getting the bike and putting it into storage with our other belongings or do I just cancel and buy something new when I return?
1. If I keep it I’ll have a nice newish bike when we return be it a 3 yr old model.
2. If I cancel it I’ll get a nice new bike when I return however with the way inflation is going am I going to get as good a bang for buck bike as I’ve got now? What will 4K get me in 3 yrs time?

Any feedback would be great. Has anyone been in a similar position and if so what did you do?

I would cancel for sure. If you still want the same bike in 3 years then get one second hand for less.
If you store and then decide you want to sell later then you won’t sell close to the purchase price now.
In 3 years there will be a better bike to buy.
Also what is the warranty on parts that will pass while stored.

Yeah cancel, faark knows what we'll be riding by then.

Besides, if you can put riding on hold for 3 years  How do you know you'll still want to ride 3 years in the future.
Where'ya going that you cant take/ride a bike, Antarctica ?

Best to cancel unless you are going to use it,
One of my previous bikes was bought off the Defence market place as its from a person who went overseas and left it in storage, needed a bit of a freshen up when I purchased it but was mint condition, ended up scoring it for a few hundred when it would have been a few thousand new.
On the other end of the stick, a friend of mine has been in Hawaii for a few years and took his bike with him, granted its a 26er and now a bit dated but he gets out on the weekends and uses it, his car that remains here has probably halved in value even though it hasn't been driven.
Can you take it with you?

There was a guy on PB hardtail thread that was an active service soldier in Afghanistan. He had a Kindom TI over there and posted shots of him riding with the locals and had a constant stream of fancy boutique parts adorning it.
I reckon if someone can still feed their bike addiction in a war zone there is nowhere on the planet you’d not take your bike.
Imagine how many internet points you’d asmass if you posted a shot riding across an Antarctic tundra!

cancel

after 3 years all the seals and various parts would have started drying out and fluids deteriorated without any use.

Yep - cancel @dan76n You would need to service shock/forks and possibly replace tyres so it would be worth much less than you paid and actually cost you hundreds to get it back to proper working order.

Consider that you would have spent hundreds if not thousands on almost useless upgrades over the 3 years (like titanium bolts to save weight, an aftermarket linkage to increase progression, VHS slapper tape because their marketing works, more tyres than you really need because you are rubber-curious and possibly a brand new set of saint cranks that you forget to fit and leave in the shed - I'm looking at you @pink poodle ) and add that to your original purchase price then get a $6,000 bike in 3 years and KNOW that you are being fiscally conservative by saving all that money over 3 years... Then buy a second bike within 3 months (we can help you justify it - just ask).

Thanks all. It’s more a case of me having very limited time to use the bike as apposed to not being able to take it. If I was going to Antarctica I’d just get snow tires ;).
I think I’ll just cancel and keep my current bike and take that, then when we return I can upgrade.
