Prescription lenzes and MTB, tips please

Hi, eyes are a little dodgy and planning a few night rides (& maybe a night race or 2) so I think I need to upgrade from the good old prescription sunnies I currantly use when I ride. Should I get some bike glasses that take prescription inserts or is there something better on the market. Any idea of costs too please?
Cheers

I use Rudy Projects with prescription photochromic lenses (go dark in UV light). They are dear though, you can get the sunglasses from wiggle, and then order lenses through your optometrist - ends up being about $600 all up.

Rudy Projects are the go! I get mine from erudy.com.au and they usually have some excellent specials. I've found the lenses to be a lot more durable than other brands and easily replaceable. I like the Racing Red lense.

The glasses go from around $120-$400 depending on what you want and if it's on special or not. I use the clip insert for my prescription and that's around the $70-$100 range and then however much the prescription lenses cost.

Contacts - daily disposable - they take a few weeks to a month to get used to, but once you work out how to put them in and take them out with ease - you will wonder how you ever lived without them.

Never worn glasses until recently, riding was getting a bit too blurry:eek:

I got Oakley jawbones with Rx lenses. Cost me an arm and a leg, but now I can see where im going! I got transition lenses so they are good night and day.

I looked into the clip on options, but in the end I think it's worth spending the cash on built in lenses. My oakleys just look like regular jawbones, and my field of view is not restricted.

I've not tried contacts, maybe they would be the goer for dh under some goggles. The glasses are a pain in my full face helmet.

Where are you located? There is a shop near me that specialises in sports Rx glasses.

+1 for Jawbones.

Bought basic black Jawbones with ordinary lenses off eBay for ~100 bucks, then ordered two sets of prescription lenses through my optometrist. Lenses cost me 250 a set I think? Clear and black. They cost a bit more because I got the vents cut into them.

You need to check the Oakley website though, as heavily curved frames like the Jawbone may not be able to accommodate your script. They have the script range listed for each model of frame.

Tried contacts a few years ago and couldn't make them work for a number of reasons. Might be worth trying again...

i used to have bolle's with clip in lenses, worst thing ever, filled up with sweat and fog...

these days have some oakley half jackets with 1 set dark, 1 set clear lenses. The lenses swap...easily, well sort of, progressively could see the little tag bit cracking, so bought another set of frames to stop swapping. not long later gf sat on the.. so I just glued the dark lenses in :).

Next time I will get transistions lenses and also a frame that doesn't clip in like regular old oakleys but clamp in.

Looked at getting rudies, in transistions, but as i refuse to get the clip in insert the lenses seemed astronomical in price ( over $1000).

Also do some shopping around if your optometrist doesn't quite get it, have found that many optometrist have no clue about the whole thing.

Thats what I use, and then any type of sunnies or DH goggles over the top is no problem whatsoever.

Just last week I went in to get a new set of regular glasses and was looking at prescription sunglasses lenses at the same time (since they'll give you a discount).
At -1.5/-3.0 they couldn't do Half-Jackets, and Oakley don't do Radar or Jawbone in prescription.

Prescription lenses were $200 on top of whatever options the lens had.
eg, Iridium lens + prescription + polarised can be somewhere in the realm of $500 just for the lenses, add more if you want it hydrophobic coated.

see thats what I mean when optometrists don't know what you they are on about... you can get radars in prescription and the reason you can't get jawbones in prescriptions is that they don't make them any more...

Yep, don't go to the optometrist for product advice.

Just check the Oakley website to make sure you can fit the prescription range you want, eBay the frames you are after, don't bother with any of those wanky coatings, just get the basic ones.

Like I said above, I paid $100ish for my Jawbones, with the hardcase and everything. In fact, I sold the stock lenses and made 40 or 50 bucks on those as well.

Take the frames to your optometrist, pay for the lenses, voila!

Yes that is the way I would do it now, this was 5-6 years ago...

problem is, when I went back to get my clear lense:
Op:"Yeah we have to send your frames to oakley to get the lenses fitted"
Me: "Er your joking right"
Op "Yes they have to be made to fit your frame"
Me "But they would have a zillion at oakley to fit to, are they that hopeless, that is just stupid, call them"
Op calls oakley..."Yes we have to send them to the USA"
Me "for fu... whatever, need them fine"

get home email oakley saying thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard, get a reply a few days later saying No you don't have to send them, my reply was Well maybe you should tell people that, they even rang you guys to confirm. Me not happy.
If I knew what my prescription was I'd just order online, but I don't and its time for new glasses...

Sorryt for rant, I'm sure some optometrists are great (and mine was really nice, they just didn't have a clue on this)

I got my jawbones only a few months back. Maybe Oakley only just stopped? Racing jackets are the same anyways, they just have a hole for a head strap.

The guy who did em, reckons he can do just about any frame/lens/prescription possible. This guy actual "gets it"with cycling glasses.

I use a set of Mako frames with photochromatic lenses.
They are a wrap around design but with full frames. As mentioned previously they are not cheap [$600] but having worn classes since I was 16 [48 now] I have long ago learned not to skimp on my vision
The Photochromatic [they darken when exposed to UV] lenses are great, dark sunnies in full sun but clear at night.

I have often been asked what they cost, when I reply "around $600.00" people say there is no way they would pay anywhere near that for a pair of sunnies as they keep losing/breaking theirs.
My answer is always "If you pay $600.00 for a pair of glasses then you make damn sure you look after them!!!"

So setonz, did you did you get clear lenses with your prescription, or just clear lenses?
I just checked out their site, thanks, looks interesting.

Cheers and thanks for all the great advise guys.

Prescription lens, -1.75 L -2.00 R, I already had the frames. so that is why the price was too good to refuse. I think my next pair will be from the radar range as the XLJ does not cover as much of the face as i like.

For a night ride I just wear my standard specs. They have a titanium frame and are very light and unobtrusive.

+1 for that, I have an older set of glasses that I use while riding.

Another tip would be to go to your op now & get a set of cheapish glasses that will hold your ears / nose, I just ordered a set for $80 after private health. If you're really nice to your op and ask him to use your 2012 and 2013 private health allocations (assuming you have extras & haven't used your 2012)

get on it quick if you can!

Thanks but you assume too much... I have no cover at all.

Spoke to 3 op's today and they recon they would send away to Oakley for the scrip lenses

I got my scrip anyway
Right....... -1.25 over -0.25 x 160
Left........ -0.50 over -1.25 x 60
I'll try and see on-line where I can get them put in a frame, and where I can get a frame.
Cheers
