Yes, because this is wrong setup (washers are between adapter and caliper).

This is correct setup (washers under the head of the bolt):
I can see your problem here too........

Reflectors on your pedals...........

I went riding with a mate yesterday who's got a Giant XTC1 - 29er and he also has these conical washers on the same brake/ rotor setup...
His were under the bolt heads - which is where I assume they're meant to go...

Bike is in at the shop today so will hopefully be resolved...

I've been advised that Shimano Australia have confirmed that these conical washers are to be mounted under the bolt heads.
They supply these washers on 180mm rotor mount adapters as the adapter doesn't allow the caliper to sit at right angles with the threaded fork section. The washers simply allow for easier alignment.
I have new bolts on order to replace the bent ones.
Thanks for everyone's technical help!

Shimano 180mm Adapter

Yeah, that's the idea. They should definitely be mounted under the bolt heads when using this type of 180mm adapter. It's worth noting that Hayes skimp here and don't use any type of conical washer with their 180mm adapter. The bolts just bend into position which is pretty terrible. At least Shimano include the conical washers for a proper fit.
