So at the ripe age of 40, I managed to score one of these whips for next to nothing:
...and holy hell is it ever fun. I've discovered that I can actually bunny hop, without SPD's, and up (and down) substantial things.
I snapped it up as a 'roll around with the kids' machine, but I think it will end being a whole lot more. So far keeping 24" wheels on it, it came with a cable disc on the front and I've dragged an old juicy 3 out for a stopper the back end. The frame will outlast the apocalypse. Components are in shit condition, but that is just perfect for it's intended thrashing....
My inner child is out, and fully in bike love - and it cost less than the bloody stem on my AM machine!
So, old farts - if you're after a way to freshen up your bling-weary bicycling experience, I'd recommend something like this as a path. It can only end well, or in hospital
