maroubra ANZAC trails

Hey, Im a newbie on this site, I registered because I am trying to get a movement going to incorpoate MTB facilities in the management plans for the old ANZAC rifle range site. This is a great headland in southern Sydney that has a fantastic range of terrain, limited downhill, techie rocks, sandy chutes, singletrack and plenty more. At the mo its a horseriding and shooting venue, but the lease is soon to be up and its slated for national park status. I am trying to get as many local riders, or interested people to agitate for MTB facilities, along the same lines as the Manly Dam network. Theres easy access for trail building, perfect areas for jump parks, single track etc. Currently the horses are hacking the trails to bits, causing erosion, so any maintainance would be doubly usful, as it would reduce their impact. Currently there is no MTB facilities between Manly and Sutherland, so its about time we in the inner city got some local trails up and running. Please leave a post if you'd support this type of thing, and Ill get a petition going online, to give to our local MP (Peter Garrett) and other locals, council etc.
Thanks a bunch!!!

Just out of interest do you know why it's been slated for national park status?

History of the area? Aboriginal significance etc?

National parks aren't such a bad thing.

Don't get me wrong, Im a rider too but just interested to hear a bit of debate.

I'll watch with interest. Cheers :)

Hey, its slated for NP because of its historical value and the presence of significant endangered bush, eastern suburbs banksia scrub. Its also the only bit of the coast between Nth head and Botany Bay that hasnt got either millions of flats or a golf course on it - so its pretty special. The local council and the state govt would love to get it developed and make lots of lovely, lovely money out of it. NSW state govt specialises in kickbacks from developers. The feds and Peter Garett are trying to have it protected,,as are lots of locals.
The headland has a big area of screwed up, bitou infested open space, bordered by bush, scrub and rocky headland areas. In and around the whole place are lots of now largely overgrown ex trailbike trails, as well as 4wd tracks from the riding range and associated with the sewerage treatment centre. Some of them are used by the horses and so are hacked to pieces. There's also areas at the back of the rifle range with big drop offs and steep bits, good for DH practice. I pick my way around the place, walking the super sandy bits and getting smacked in the head by branches. Its no Orimbah state forest, but its as good as it gets locally for off road. You can also keep going sth over the golf courses and right down to Botany Bay, if youre keen and follow your nose. The trails need boarding up, cambering and clearing out a bit to be great. The open space needs a big jump park bulldosed into it to be awesome.

you get in from Malabar, near the entrance to the sewage treatment plant, just go through the gate, then right through the boom gate and go straight ahead, theres a lot of terrain which you can wander around, practice jumps, hops and drops- there's a bunch of other entry points, to get to different parts including decent bush singletrack, but you need to go through/over/under a big fence. Otherwise, go to the boatramp at Malabar nth side and around the end of the concrete barrier, then either straight along the cliff top on a very techie single track or left and up the road to the end, once youre up there there's heaps of rocks, ledges etc to jump around on. its where the end of MI2 was filmed. unfortunately the best bits of single track that used to be packed down have been loosened up and wrecked by the horses. you used to be able to pedal all the way to Maroubra beach sth end, about 6kms all up of single track. its very much an explore/follow your nose type of place. as I said, not much that is flowing or long stretches, but good for practicing skills. at the mo I think there's me and maybe 1 or 2 others who ride up there.

by the by, strictly speaking, the area is closed, but 100s of locals walk, ride, walk dogs, fish and bird watch in the area and use the paths. there's big signs at certain points telling you you cant go in and at other points open gates. there's a riding school in there too, so the public goes in and out all the time. just avoid going in if the flags are up and you can hear guns going off (durr). and be polite to the walkers and slow down/stop if you see the horse riders. everyone gets on fine.
