Hayes El Camino

I've been having a dig around on here for info after finding these on CRC and i've got a question or 2...

Can I use El Camino for Downhill?

How well do they perform?

Are they easy to service?

The reason i'm asking is because they are listed for $104(front) and $88(rear) on CRC.

The only negative things I found on here is one person stated that El Camino's fade fairly quickly if they're exposed to heavy braking and another person said the pistons have a habit of getting stuck.

The other thing that's bothering me - how easy is it to set them up? I've done brake bleeding before and it's easy as, my dilemma here is connecting the hoses, do I need specialist tools?

I'm currently running an old set of Hayes 9's and while they still cut the mustard i'm thinking it's time to retire them from active service as they are 2002-pedigree.

I'd go for another brand such as Shimano Saint or maybe try the Hayes Stroker range but they are outside my budget.

El Caminos

I've had 2 x sets of el-camino's, both used for DH.

Easy to bleed, enough power (just), easy to set up, fairly resistant to damage.

Main issue was, they just seem to lose power as the pads wear (duh I hear you say)

But I mean even down at half worn, they just aren't as good, they honestly never work 100% unless they have new (read no wear) pads in them.

Still, they are a valid alternative for some.

ps

power does not even come close to saints, new xt's or juicy's

i had a set on my DH bike for around 6 months when they first came out, i found them average at best. even with 8" rotors they would fade and 'pump up' at any sign of heat. i tried putting goodridge lines and RPF fluid (the highest boiling point of brake fluids) with only a very slight improvement. They eventually found their way onto my 5" trail bike and even on that when things got rough or fast, the same thing would happen. I dont ride DH anymore but on my trail bike i now have a set of Shimano SLX brakes, far better than my el camino's were.
