I'm surprised no one has mentioned Anne-Caroline Chausson yet.

Probably the most successful rider in the sport so far. Her titles really speak for themselves.

As a technological moment for mountain biking you could add the introduction of the Marzzochi Bomber Z1 in 1996. Riders of a certain age still get weak at the knees when they spot one of those on a bike.

Shimano Airlines is also an interesting side note.

Ned Overend - 1990 World Championships - the first ever MTB world champion.
