gear indicator

I have a sram x-5 gear changer. the gear indicator is stuck on gear 8 and sometimes works but will show 4 while it is gear 1. It doesnt affect changing but is annoying. Has anyone had this problem before and can you fix it youself or will the changer explode in to pieces if i open it?

Do you ever look at the indicator anyway?

If it is like the old x9 stuff then all it is a bit of plastic that engages a small cog inside the shfter so a simple thing to have a look at and fix but as the other fellow here says do you ever look at the indicator? None of the new X9 stuff has an indicator and it never bothers me.
