cracked my sxtrail chainstay:(

So I was cruising around mtbr looking for known problems with the demo 8's and started looking at people who had cracked their 05' and 06' enduro's and sx trails. They all started on the left side chain stay and was quite common (I found about 7).

I thought mmm...I better check mine (06'). Went down cleaned off the area and found a dirty big crack. Damn. I bloody love this bike. The 07' sx trail's have a big gusset on the inside of the chainstay. I'll see go see appleby's and see what Specialized can do. It's a known issue, with Jake Wake himself addmitting it on MTBR, so hopefully I can get something done however I am the second owner and although I know the origional owner, the shop he bought it from know's he no longer has it.

Anyone else had this problem? Grip seen many? The crack appears white because I put some fine flour on it to make it pop in the picture.

my friend clean snapped his in the same area. You can order them through your lbs....they cost about $300 i think? Unless its covered by warranty, but as your the second owner i doubt it would be.

bummer.....yea i would be checking around, grip will prob do it cheaper than getting a new chainstay from your lbs but also check out if there has been a recall on on the part may get a good deal if its been a common problem

from the blue colour, that looks like its an 05 enduro expert. the 06 sx trails were poo brown and had a gusset over the weak spot.

i had one, and got mine repaired on warrenty 2 years after it was bought, and i got it second hand. specialised have an ace warrenty dept, especially as its a design flaw...

Nah the 06's had the same issue as far as I know. Basically, all 05/06 enduro/SX frames have questionable chainstays... they'll last provided you take it easy, but under hard use breaking is pretty normal.

The first model with the updated stay is the baby blue 07 SX Trail, not sure if the other bikes in the enduro lineup actually got the same update.

For dilzy - you probably won't get warranty on a second hand frame via specialized au, unless you know a shop owner who'll do you a personal favour. Apart from that your options will be to either get your current stay gripped, or to buy an 07 stay. I would price estimate that at around $200-250 judging by other broken specialised FSR chainstays I've priced in the past (not at all uncommon on any FSR bike unfortunately.. norco / spesh / whatever).

Yeah, yeah... blah, blah.
Grip seen many? .
A number of them... but as stated, Specialized have a good warranty program so we probably haven't had as many through our workshop as there are actually out there.

Unfortunately I can't help you with the cost of a new stay, but obviously if you put a new stay of the same design on you're going to end up with the same issues that caused your original one to break. I also have no idea whether or not a redesigned/strengthened later model stay will retro fit, but for what it's worth... a repair, strengthen and realignment from us (unpainted) would cost you $195-210 and another $40 to bead blast, prep and powdercoat it (if you want it painted).

With "normal" chain stays we would repair the crack then plate the stay top and/or bottom (as required) as in this pic...

but assymetrical stays are more complicated than "normal" ones. I couldn't find a pic of a Spez stay but this Cannondale shows the same issues and the type of gusseting required...

to end up looking like this...

Hope this info helps. Good luck with it.

Grip, you refer to assymetrical stays and normal ones...just a question; I have always wondered, (perfect example are older Giant ACs) why one chainstay is higher then the other, when viewed from a side profile. What is this an example of?

Just curious...

I had the same thing happen to an 06 enduro the replacement cost $350 and took a long time to get the right colour. Good luck.

When Specialized refer to assym chainstays they mean there is a 6mm offset to the drive side to allow for a dishless rear wheel. I don't think the Enduro/SX frames have it, my 04 SX doesn't, but the later model SX Trails may.

It's just the photo that makes it look blue, it's actually black.

Assymetry can be a way of designing in certain structural properties to something (such as a chainstay)... OR it can simply be to allow clearance somewhere... OR it can be a giant wank thought up by the marketing dept :p. Luckily with bikes it tends to be "by design" for a very particular purpose. Of course whether or not it scores the dual goals of achieving that purpose and hanging together is sometimes a different matter.

In this case though I'm not talking about assymetry for the purpose of offsetting a hub etc. Have a look at the photo posted by Udi of the blue bike... check out the line of the two chain stays. ;)

Enduro SX 07 chainstay replacement for sale. Brand new silver in colour.

I have a spare brand new never used 07 Enduro SX 07 Chainstay Replacement in silver. I believe but am not 100% sure that it should fit all 150mm Enduros 2005 - 2006. This chain stay is the strongest version in that particular series & looks identical to the one fitted to the baby blue Enduro SX on page 1 & on the Specialized web site http://www.specialized.com/ie/gb/bc/SBCProduct.jsp?arc=2007&spid=22254. Please send me a private mail if anyone is interested.

As an update to this thread, my replacement stay which I bought new for $300 astronomical dollars from Spesh complete with gussett, cracked in a similar spot.

The problem is that sudden increase in stiffness where the tube meets the forging (tube being way stiffer). So, instead of crying this time I got some 5mm 5053 I think it was, created a proper gusset by carving it like a bauss with a new 5" grinding wheel and bending it so it sat properly and welded it up. I'll get a picture so you can see it properly, welding wasn't that great, needed like 160amps and the tig at uni only put out 120. It's lasted quite a while now so it seems to have done the trick.

Also, have a mate with one, his housemates have them and they've gone through like 5 chainstays between them. Spesh won't even warranty it even if you bought the bike new if it's after one year. It's a known design problem and they're a bunch of tossers who need horse whipping.
