Turps. Get two big glass jars. 1/3 fill one with turps. Put chain in to soak, give it a shake etc. Pull it out and hang to dry, then fit and lube. All the crap will settle out of turps and end up at the bottom of jar 1. Tip turps into jar 2 and clean out the bottom of jar 1. Use jar 2 for next chain.

Mr Greenfield
Take summitfever's volatile solvent of choice and put it in tomac204airahifts ultrasonic cleaner and you can clean anything fast. Baby formula tins are ideal. ( but not enough of a good idea on its own to have a kid )

But the solvent must be in a container floating in the bath, don't fill the ultrasonic cleaners bucket with solvent, only use outdoors, have a fire extinguisher handy, there is a good chance of fire. Organic solvents are toxic, wear PPE.

Beware, the above will strip paint and anodise off before you can say "cyclocross sucks balls"

I have found that this TF2 spray lubricant stuff works better than any degreaser Ive tried.

I don't think it matters which degreaser you use. The Morgan blue type chain cleaners will get most of the crap off but if you want a perfectly clean chain then kero or petrol is the go. If you're worried about washing the lube out of the pins, keep a small container of Rock n Roll blue or gold and soak your chain for 30 minutes or so. You waste a bit of lube this way but it still works out cheaper than some other methods.
