504w battery and STEPS E7000 motor OK for big rider?

I only get to ride maybe 2 or 3 times a month these days so my fitness is crap and when I do go for rides I struggle in the hills. Decided to look at getting a E-mtb. Maybe a Marin Trail 7 or something lower priced.

My 'expert' mate said terrain and riders weight are the main factors with range and performance of e bikes. I'm a big guy, 6'4 and 100kg. Do I need a premium motor and a 600+ battery to get me around the local 30k trail rides? My favourite trails do have a lot of steep areas which will be hard on the bike. I can get up them in my current bike but man it's not fun..

Also, expert mate said the lower tech stuff doesn't last that long, so I'm to expect a 20-30% battery degradation in 2 years? 99 bikes salesguy is like 'maybe 10% over 5 years' which sounded too optimistic.

Any truth in either opinion?

I'm 93kg and didn't risk it with the E7000 when I bought. I heard bad things about them at the time and steered clear.
The 500w battery has been fine for me too. If riding up a lot of steep stuff on boost I get about 1.5/2 hours worth which is all the time I can normally ride for. I was also expecting to have replaced my battery by now after 3000km but haven't noticed any real degradation in it.

For the price I think this is best bang for buck at the moment

Mr Greenfield
Battery capacity losses for shimano packs are less then other brands as they have been using Sony cells. Sony sold their battery devision to Murata a couple years ago. Still referred to as Sony. I’ve not had apart a recent Shimano battery so this might have changed.

Sony’s chemistry is superior to Samsung and Panasonic’s with regards to consistency between cells and charge cycle degradation is less with Sony/Murata. One downside to this is the sony/murata cells energy density is a little behind the Samsung/Panasonic offerings. 3000mAh vs 3500mAh.

The wife has capped my purchase price to $5500. So my choices have shrunk considerably..

Another expert at work said the new Shimano EP6 is much more powerful than the older E7000 series, apparently it's quiter and a bit more efficient for the fans money.

OnlyFans for an extra couple of G's. Sell kids, sell everything.

I've never ridden an EP8 but they are specced on all the Norcos and I know a lot of heavy units riding the eSights and eRanges.

I very nearly bought this bike. Great value for money and awesome spec.

I purchased the Marin Alpine Trail E1 and ended up spending a bunch more cash on upgrades like forks and brakes. Would have been better to buy a higher end bike to start with. The E1 has the E7000 and 500w battery and is fine for most rides I do (Bright mostly) but when doing the big rides over 30km I definitely get conscious of the range limitations and drop the assist levels to ensure I get better range as nothing feels heavier than an ebike with a flat battery.

The E2 definitely has better components, motor and bigger battery. In some areas, better components that my Ibis at over twice the price.

Leave it to me, I'll have a few words with her.

Good luck with that's, she's a redhead..

Might have to stretch the budget with some covert savings. The only way I'll get a descent Emtb is if I sell my motor bike as well... (which costs as much as a bicycle with a battery)

I've turned 40 and want to get a boomer skooter. Was about to buy a Merida Big400 ebike at 99 Bikes today
for 4k https://www.99bikes.com.au/merida-22-ebig-nine-400-teal-blue-lime#additional then thought I'd appreciate a duelie more as I have lower back issues.
Now wife said 5k max limit and that greatly limits the market. The only 2 decent spec bikes are at bikes online and I'm not 100% about buying online but they are $1.5k cheaper that the same spec stuff in shops.

Anyone bought ebikes from them and what would be the better buy out of the 2 cheapest models?

Also I'm overweight and tall, 6'3 and 110kg. I avoid jumps but love trail riding. Belair, OHH, ect for local reference.

Any help welcome.

soft-arse Yuley is on the lifts again
I reckon both would be fine. Basic in some ways but solid spec with good support from local distro.

Geometry on both looks good and very close to each other. Spec is also not too far apart but the polygon looks to have a slight advantage.

Honestly, both are great value and could be upgraded over time if you found yourself using it a lot.

let you google that for me

I don't anything about the motor but the brakes look decent on both (slight advantage to the Marin?) but the shock on the Polygon appears to be better. Maybe that's the better bet? Also I loved my Zeron coil fork when I had my hardtail. I'm 6'5" and 103kg btw.

May not be exactly what you are looking for .

but I’m a heavy unit ,100 kg and around 400-500 metres of climbing on a 30-35 klm ride was achievable

However , I haven’t ridden for more than 5 or 6 Kay’s in the last 6 months … so that makes me a slug

And it’s winter , in Central Vic and I’m soft .

but my trek has been a beast - just round 5500 klm , eats brakes , chains n 11 speed is okay for around 1000 klms of muddy shiite riding and I rode it hard .

its a Powerfly 7 for reference - I need new forks .

have upgraded the wheels and popped some ice tek rotors on, would highly recommend.

Consider looking around secondhand if on a tight budget. You have to be careful in making sure stuff has been looked after, but there's been some great deals around on higher end Merida e160s, Trek Rails and the like lately.

Otherwise, if buying new that Alpine Trail E2 would be my pick nowadays. Like Moorey said, seriously good spec for the price on that discount.

I'm in Adelaide, albeit, 50+k out of Adelaide..

Last place I looked at that had a well used demo only was taking $300 off the price in a $3500 bike:(

I think the Marin might be good for me, only issue is that cheapy rear shock but that can be upgraded later. I don't do jumps anymore so it's probably not a big issue.

Not in Blackwood any more, Mitten? Have you moved further South into God's country?
