I just got this email from MTBA
explainning what is happenning with the 03 Championships etc.
MTBA and AMBA, in conjunction with key members of Team Mt. Beauty and the
National Championships event managers at Mt. Beauty have confirmed that the
dates for the rescheduled Australian National MTB Championships will be the 29th
October - 2nd November 2003 and will be hosted at Mt. Beauty in the Victorian
highlands.
The rescheduled Nationals came about due to the devastating bush fires that
burnt through the area earlier in 2003, taking with them the Nationals XC and DH
courses.
In a recent teleconference everyone agreed that these dates were the best ones
to move forward from what has been a very unusual and difficult race season.
Tony Scott, president of MTBA said, "The reconstruction of the courses is
progressing well and it is expected that with recent rains and in the fullness
of time the area will be picture postcard material come race day." He added,
"Both MTBA and AMBA are very aware of the fact that the dates for the
rescheduled Nationals may effect some people, particularly those in the U19 age
classes due to their school commitments. We do apologise for this, but this race
season has been extraordinary in many ways and circumstances beyond our control
have acted in to the detriment of some of our key MTB events earlier this year.
Such circumstances are unlikely to happen again for quite a while, but we need
to move on. The new dates, while not optimal - those would have been the planned
dates in February, but are the next best set of dates - dates that accommodate
Team Mt. Beauty as the national's host, and the majority of riders."
MTBA and AMBA would encourage all those that may be affected by the November
dates to discuss their plans for the event with their parents and coaches and
make the appropriate decision. Scott added, "We are hopeful that with the long
time frame, and with suitable planning, most of our emerging athletes will be
able to attend and be part of the 2003 National MTB Championships."
Damian Grundy, head Cycling Australia MTB Coach said, "Make no mistake, these
are the 2003 National Championships, and everyone wants to do well, to be
noticed and to take home a National Championship jersey."
Further details on the event program will be available soon, and any
clarifications needed can be obtained by contacting MTBA at
