Exactly. Australia doesn't have many steep climbs (well not in VIC), but take a trip to NZ and you'll be hating your 36t ring up front pretty quickly... Personally I like a ratio that allows me to ride anywhere.
I find 34 up front is fine on an 11-36 cassette. Ride a 29er. I havnt found a hill around me that i have had to stop riding because it was to hard. I have found not having that extra gears to drop down just makes you ride the hill smarter
