Not arguing that fact, we can make do with a lot less than we think we need.

We were brought up in the 80's, me and my 2 brothers in the back of a Mini Metro. My dad had 3 of them before upgrading to a Maestro.

Cars will do the job, but do they do it well... if you can afford better and would like better, why not do it. We are only here for short time, if you have worked hard and like something, get it.

Mini Metro for 5, sometimes even had a 2 mates, 1 in the front, 3 in the back and youngest bro in the boot.

I love my ute's versatility for gardening duties, picking up furniture, tip runs, camping, mountain biking etc.

I only spent $40k on mine and it's been fantastic so far. I admit to doing the odd school run but only if the weather atrocious. It's done 11,000km in 18 months and that includes a round trip to Fraser Island!

Have you looked at and driven one, or another internet-wank opinion ?
No, I haven't driven one. Maybe it looks much better in the flesh and just doesn't photograph well. But based on that image you've posted I don't like the styling at all.

My Golf was 17k and I bet it could do all the jobs you've done with the 7x4 trailer I have. In fact I can fit more stuff in it than you can in the ute tray.

Or spend anything on a giant 4WD ;)
Kid of a mate rolled mate's Hilux last week. Apparently they are not great at reverse j-turns, and this kid is not great at physics. I'm convincing mate a Model Y, Ioniq 5 or EV6 should be the replacement because he needs a ute about as much as ozzy's son or jabubu, which is not very much.

I'm sure it could but I don't have the space for another trailer, I've already got a camper trailer to store. Plus I can choose not to hook a trailer up and instead take two dogs to the beach and not sully the interior.

They probably don't if they only camp at Big4.

I’ll take the “hassle” of hooking up a trailer (picking up 800kg of pavers is rarely an impulse purchase, so no real need to have the capability on hand at all times…) over the tens of thousands of dollars in vehicle purchase and running costs. And having to drive a bloody cumbersome death trap pos 4WD around everywhere… But hey, if hooking up a trailer occasionally is really that hard, than I guess you “need” a 4WD ;)

This is from a man who owns french and Italian cars. His pain threshold is very very high.

It's only a deathtrap if you're the one getting hit by it!

We had to take the trailer out to the bike club this weekend. I must be a fucking saint because not only did I put my trailer on, I had to take it off when we got there, go get the club trailer, put it on and then do the whole thing in reverse to get home! I was shagged! Can only image how those truckie bloke get thru a day.!

The Colorado, especially compared to the Hilux, is quite stiffly sprung so doesn't too bad a job of keeping the weight centered, but man you can feel there's a lot of mass being asked to change direction. And the first thing I noticed when we bought it was the sidewall flex.

I'm siding with @Jabubu on this one. While many such cars are not used as they should be, I love my hilux. Great for gardening, camping, etc. Yes, I could buy a wagon and try to use tarps etc to not to kill the interior, but a tray is really easy. Plus, I can still have my family in the car and carry all the camping stuff (no need to fold down seats). And yes, all that stuff is nice to have when you head off for a month or three at a time.
Mine has no '4wd mods' but has happily tackled a number of places that other cars would not get to unscathed. It has also found some areas where it needed some help.
I also live in a semi-rural area where there are a lot of dead kangaroos on the side of the road. Multiple people I know have hit them and done significant damage to their cars. My big bull bar has saved my car once already.
The big car also works well as a fuckwit-tailgater deterrent. It gets tailgate a lot less then my sedan. So much so that my wife much prefers driving the hilux for that reason alone
