Although I'd argue the first answer is correct - subduction zone are at the boundary of continental plates. The Oceanic plate goes under the edge of the continental plate largely intact until its melted into the mantle.

The vulcanism along subduction zones is from the friction remelting the plates, not the actual mantle coming up - thats hotspots like Hawaii..
