You can get Windlasses at the stern as well. Large boats tend to have mooring equipment all over the deck.
Not a lot of stretch, ofteb made from similar fibres as braided fishing line. When they do fly into the boat it can pretty wild. I've never been hit by one, but saw a friend cop it once...he came up in a huge welt. We were towing a fellow who weighed in about 130kg on a biscuit at the time, so there was a lot of drag.It’s designed to have some stretch.
And yes, plenty. Never seen one return even 1/2 way to the boat.
