Australia’s largest variety cycling event comes to Canberra
Friday 2 to Sunday 4 December 2005

The inaugural Brindabella Challenge, Australia’s largest variety cycling festival, hits Canberra in December, with a huge range of events, activities and races for all ages and levels of riders taking place over three days.

Some of Australia’s and the world’s top cyclists are expected to travel to Canberra for the challenge and to vie for more than $30,000 in prize money. Recreational riders, families and kids will also be able to choose from a range of great fun rides and events.

Canberra’s reputation as a great cycling destination is being celebrated with partnerships between Australian Capital Tourism and some of Australia’s leading cycling clubs and outdoor event organisers. The weekend will feature something for everyone including cash and prizes for mountain bike, road and BMX competitions; winery and café bicycle tours; amazing freestyle BMX and acrobatics; and an exciting program of non-cycling entertainment.

Veteran Tour de France competitor and chair of the Brindabella Challenge Steering Committee, Stephen Hodge, says the event is designed for anyone from anywhere with any interest in watching or participating in fun and spectacular leisure activities.

‘Families, young children and serious competitors will all find something to suit their energy and skill levels in the Brindabella Challenge,’ he said. ‘There will be more than enough to satisfy hard core competitors as well as those who just want to join in and experience Canberra’s great weather, great cycling paths and great activities.’

The Brindabella Challenge promotes the ACT as ‘Australia’s Cycling Territory’ and takes advantage of all that the ACT has to offer including the extensive bike path network right throughout the city and past some of Australia’s best-known attractions. Challenge yourself to take part in as much as you can or pace yourself with a few events and a chance to watch the action and see the sights. Bring your family and friends and relax with a picnic and enjoy the entertainment.

The event kicks off on Friday night in Canberra’s city centre, while the weekend’s activities move to the Event Hub, set up on the lawns between Old Parliament House and Questacon. There’s also event action in the Brindabella Mountains and at the Canberra BMX Park at Melba in the northern suburbs of Canberra.

Entries are now open so visit www.brindabellachallenge.com.au for more information and to register in one or more events. ‘Over the Brindabella Challenge weekend there will be a race or ride for anyone and everyone, register now!’ Stephen Hodge said.
