Can't for the life of me understand why we are getting on board some stupid US tradition which holds absolutely no societal value.

I assume the idea is that kids see other kids having fun and go 'hey, that looks like fun'.
Plus they are probably sick and tired of hearing about how they never spend time outdoors...

Yep.
I heard some feedback from the kids and parents who participated last year in our neighborhood.
Most households were a bit lazy or only really embraced a very small part of the tradition. Many just put bags of lollies out on the front porch, assuming the kids would take a just few and leave the rest for others. The neighborhood teenagers went round early and scooped up all the booty leaving nothing. I had to laugh but there were lots of pissed off parents, who somehow felt their kid had been cheated.
