I was driving past Chatswood yesterday and I see little chippers (probably 12-13 years old) on 05 Stinkys and Bighits and I'm thinking how the hell can they afford a $3000+ bikes
Fawk! At that age, I was still on a Repco BMX.

Pffft... Those are cheap bikes compared to some kids I've seen on the northern beaches.

Basically, they're spoiled rich kids whose parents give them the money. The rest of us have to work for it.

i understand what your on about

im 13-14 and i had to pay for half my bike (giant stp2)
any kid that has a $1500+ bike and didnt pay for at least half of it, are spoilt

im not saying its not nice to have a sick bike at that age, i just believe its spoilt

not even some of my mates who are 16-17-18 dont have that much to spend on a bike

but thats what you get on the lower north shore, actually any part of the north shore, rich kids who get spoilt by their $100,000.00+ a year sallery (sp?)

i need a job, to bad im still to young, bah im going up to northside to try get a job, maybe they wont be as tight as bbf

cheers

Ive been working since i was 12. Bought everything ive needed myself, but it would be so good if your parents got you everything you ever wanted. Ohh, the possibilities.

i worked for a year fulltime last year. ina government job no less, and at the end of 8 months, id finally managed to scrape together enough for my d8.

the biggest factor was that i had to pay rent, bills and other expenses which dug into my bike savings. this pushed back my saving for the 8 months instead of the 4 it should have taken.

its unfortunate the kids these days dont know the true value of money. most of them will trash their $5000+ bikes because they are hacks, or the bike is too much for them to handle, and then their mums and dads will buy new ones for them. sad but true...

for all those who saved to get your steeds, be proud, it feels alot better riding something you bought, compared to something that was handed to you on a platter

yes what bike should i choose to ride today, the foes mono with fox 40s and hope 6pots ti, or maybe i should ride a bit more of a freeride bike, maybe i will get my norco shore out with all my super duper upgrades out

and this afternoon i will go for a street ride on wither my pink pornking with manitou sherman breakout plus and hope m4s or maybe i will go out on my evil imperial with sherman jumpers and hope minis

god although it would be nice, i just could not pick which bike i would ride

cheers

EDIT for what wattsy said about kids hacking their bikes, most of them will stop riding in a year or so, either because they got bored or decided to follow a new phase

But this is where everyone can take advantage, buying awesome gear, super cheap, because the kids wouldnt have a clue what its worth. I know ive done that before! :p

You worked full-time? for a year? A whole year? Come on mate, pull the other one, no one has done that before.

You mean the 4 months it should have taken while you were living with your parents perhaps.

So you have statistics on this? The majority of kids I know who have their stuff bought for them either have the talent to justify the bike. Admittedly it isn't many people. But how is a thirteen year old meant to save up $2000+ for a dh bike, especially when said thirteen yr old is posting elite level times at National/State DH rounds.

I agree it does feel good to save up & pay for something. But sometimes it isn't possible. When I was 12-13 I lucky to make 20 bucks a week, & that was with an after school job. Say a kid earns $50 a week, puts 30 towards a bike. That is 1 year to get an STP, 2 years to get an entry level DH bike (new). How much patience did you have when you were that age?

I say don't worry about it, there will always be people better off & people worse off. Live & let live.

**Nothing against you personally W2ttsy, its just that your post seemed a litle condescending :)

I think its ok for parents to buy their young children bikes but maybe not demo 9s as said they will go follow another sport or something which then would be a bit of a waste of how ever much they cost!
Unless a demo 9 is like spare money to them ;)

I'm 14 and i get so anoyed watching and racing against other guys on there awsome $4000 bikes. I only have a 04 Norco Bigfoot(race downhill) which is worth $1000 and i had to sell my motorbike just to get it and I've pretty much spent all my birthday and chriastmas money on race enrties. I've seen guys on there $5000 dules and then they pull out there 4X bike as well. You should have seen Eildon.

Oh well i happy riding my bike until i get a job to buy a better bike and i arnt against guys on awsome bikes but good luck to them.

im one of the ones who was extremly lucky to have their bike bought for them in full by their parents. i know how it must feel for you guys that work for your money for so long and then have spoilt little shits (yes i will use that term talking about myself because i know its 100% true) getting everything handed to them on a silver platter... just recently though ive been realising how bad it actually is and ive been looking for a job to hopefully pay back some of what i have been given, i know i dont and a lot of people like me who have had their bikes paid for dont deserve them but thats the way life is, hell i was riding a huffy once apon atime and hated people who had their bikes given to them now look at me, i honestly do feel bad about it when i see some guy whos much better than me bashing his way down the trail on a 5 year old repco though...

lotec my man, that's the best post you've ever made.
i like it when i used to rip past ppl on my steel ss (cool as it was) when they were struggling up a hill on their specialized epic. meh, made me feel good.
sometimes now i find myself being soft, and occasionly beaten by somebody like this, but idont mind, it just makes me realise that i've gone soft :) so i speed up and beat their ass.

Im one of the kids who buy everything myself. Im 14 turning 15 at the moment, and ride a da bomb xlr8 (well i do when it isnt sitting in my room waiting for money to fix it like it is currently). Sure ive got a nice bike at the moment, but i started out on a ridgid giant boulder 24" wheeled bike, then spent ages saving up the 400 dollars to buy a second hand cannondale xc bike, Then i sold that to buy a second hand da bomb xlr8 which i got because i couldnt even afford a avanti hotdog, then saved and saved to upgrade some of the dodgy parts on it, which i destoroyed rather quickly (anyone from perth who saw the rst gilas or the alvio cranks would know what i mean) .
I would rather this, and would rather have my bike sitting broken in my room at the moment, than to having a nice demo 9 sitting there which my parents bought me. This may sounds stupid to some, but getting on my bike, which i sweated and swore to get is the best feeling, you feel you really own it, and its something to be proud of.
I think what we need more of is bikeshops helping out tackers who can ride well but dont have the cash (does anyone remember the story of the kid on here a while ago who was on the malvern star, and got given a cherry bomb?).
ps i have nothing against 13 year old kids who have $5000 bikes IF they having the riding skills to warrant the bike, what i hate is 13 year olds on $5000 bikes jumping off kerbs, that gives me the shits.
in conclusion, however you got youre bike, just ride it and enjoy it :)
over and out

I am not having a go at your post as such bigpete, but for the wealthy, (and I do know what I am talking about), the price of a Demo nine is not spare change to ANYONE. Thats quite a bit of money. Unless they are STUPID, and you generally don't find wealth and stupidity going together.

I kind of understand parents buying their kids a bike like this because of the following: their kids are outdoors and active (not plonked in front of a playstation), they are learning skills (not just stuffing about in a pool or something), they are not hanging around with deadshits vandalising or bonging on, and they're doing what they enjoy. But then I can hear some of you guys saying "why won't a $1000 bike do?" - well why do some people drive Porsches, and others a 10year old Falcon - if you can afford it, then why not?

Having said that, I don't like the idea of just giving them a $6k bike without having done their own work, or something to EARN the bike. They must learn the value of a dollar somehow, otherwise when they come to the real world without mummy and daddy, they'll get a real surprise.

really? do you even watch TV?
i wouldnt class most celebrities as genius. although quite often you will find comedians as very intelligent (especially the ones that act dumb ;) ), but i think there's a difference between having a really good marketing team for themselves, and being intelligent.

That is very noble of you Rexy but i don't believe it for a second.

I am jelous as hell of the stupidly wealthy but hey, you can't hold it against them, you can only play the hand you are dealt. Some kids get dealt four aces, others a whole deck of torn and faded jokers... so be it.

And kids if you think it hurts to watch a grom on a 5K bike.... wait until you have been working full-time for 5-10 years and then you see some crew cruising all day everyday towing jet skis to the beach, partying, living it up... whatever, all on M & D's cash... that hurts, oh how that hurts!!

And you know what.... jealousy makes you very ugly.
