Wheel Build Advice Thread

My wheel building advise. Don’t do it while watching the DH WC replay....or probably the US election updates.
The former caused me a few hiccups.

I recently bought some spokes from a (usually) reputable source, the threads are partially munted near the top and the cut is pretty jagged. When I try to thread a nipple on it catches and the amount of resistance makes me concerned I'm going to wreck the nipple thread.
Any way I can rectify this or should I send a stern email?

I think a courtesy email with photo would be expected. Sure looks like these have been attempted to be threaded onto something that wasn't the right size before.

Do they all look like this or just a few?

All of them. Bought brand new and cut to size.

Yeah that's a shitty finish on custom cut spokes so I'd send them back.

It will also make it tricky for you to quickly set the initial engagement depth, if you use a nipple holder with a depth gauge.

I was thinking more along the lines of cleaning up the threads rather than cutting from new. Rolled threads are always better but a quick clean would mean no lost time faffing around with returns. As you were.

Edit, rolling increases the OD of the thread so a 2mm nipple becomes a 2.2mm thread. According to the Park Tool website, the typical 2mm spoke has a 2.2mmx56TPI thread. This converts to a 2.2mmx0.45mm metric thread pitch. Ish. Doesn't really convert into imperial or metric other than a dedicated thread rolling die or specialist die nut.

Edit again, apparently a 2-56 die nut will replicated the thread and these are available at places like Jaycar who sell a kit with an M2.2 0.45 pitch dienut or Hobby places...
