Read this recently myself after one of my female friends raved about it as a trauma response processing novel so I guess I am also up for a sledge. Pretty decent but like @Sky_Collapsed I reckon it needed a more ruthless editor. Could've probably lost 30% of the length without affecting the story. And yeah as romantasy genre novels go it's a long way from The Fourth Wing series, or the Sarah J Maas fairy smut books (spoiler alert, I've read those as well).
 
I recently read finished reading one book on the history of Taiwan and it's a lot bloodier than I'd ever imagined. The indigenous tribes for the longest time didn't have much time for outsiders and basically killed anyone that came ashore, including hapless survivors of many shipwrecks.

yep agree. i reckon there's probably at least 20-30 pages of uselessness and on top of that, i found some grammar errors here and there that i just had to correct myself.

Definitely could have done with another go over for sure but oh well, ignoring that i think it wasnt a bad read really.

How smutty is the smut? Is it hot?

It's got to be better than Ian Fleming's typical Bond 'sex' scene, jumping some chick - often described in a single sentence that reads akin to a wild animal attack, or words to that effect.

George RR Martin needs a ruthless editor ; I love the books don't get me wrong (started way back in the early 90s probabvly not the year it came out but pretty close) but the dude can sure as hell ramble on, come on mate, get on with it!

ps still haven't watch any of the show past like series 3 ; I have managed to stay relatively spoiler free ; exception is I have a strong suspicion that Jon Snow is still alive in the show after he gets stabbed during that big battle at the end of the last book - but then again I did suspect/hope this was the case anyway. It would be hard to resolve the story without him I think.
There is only 1 thing I want to see happen if the spanner ever gets around to finishing the books (highly doubtful): that is for Ayra to reunite with Nymeria and GO AND KILL THEM ALL. Only really care about Bran, Arya and Jon. It has been so long since I read the books there are probably other characters still alive that I like that I cannot remember 🤣 Might have to reread them, who knows it might seque into the release of the Winds of Winter :p

Much of the discourse around the romantasy genre is that women write better sex scenes than male authors. On the whole I would agree with that.

Talking a break from a bunch of Pratchett I’ve been reading and rediscovered Brandon Sanderson’s stormlight archive series. I’d stopped reading the series when I’d finished the third novel and nothing else had been released, fast forward to last week and I’d discovered another 2 full novels and 2 novella’s had been completed!
Feels good to have some catching up to do. Just starting wind and truth now which is the end of this story arc.
Fantasy that shies away from Tolkien tropes is a good time. I love the unique setting and world building.

This was me with the Raymond E Feist Midkemia novels. Start reading them back in the late 90s, got to the "last" book at the time and went on with reading something else.

Got back to the Midkemia novels, but decided to just start from the start again, still ended up finishing them (to the "last" book available).

Finally when he completed the full saga, I re-read them all to the actual end.

Ian Irvine is another one that I will need to start reading from A Shadow On The Glass, because it was fkn ages ago when I started the Three World's Saga
