Water water everywhere...

Lazmo

Old and hopeless
Tonight, I was in the kitchen cleaning up after cooking tea, and I hear this really loud bang followed by the sound of rushing water. I race to the bathroom, and out of the vanity, there is water and steam going gangbusters. I race to the mains water tap out the front and shut it off. Race back to the bathroom and sure enough the sink hot water flexible braided hose has burst. So, turn the hot water tap off, and turn the mains back on, and water is still going everywhere. Not as much, but still bad. Grab a towel and super human the tap and it nearly stops. Grab some multigrips and really tighten the tap and it totally stops.

Unrelated, but I replaced the kitchen hot water hose about 6 months ago, as the fitting had a slow drip, and then not long afterward the dishwasher hot water hose as it also had a slow drip at the fitting. It's like all the hot water hoses spat the dummy at the same time.

Phark... imagine if I wasn't home... or it was just my adult kids at home... they wouldn't know even know what a mains tap was... and/or where it was located. It would be a disaster and a costly water bill too.

Phew.

I tested it and it seems fine.

I'm pretty sure my plumber replaced it, when he was doing some other stuff about 2 years ago, as it had a slow leak.

Looking for his receipt now.

Glad you were there to stave off the internal flood.

I had a scenario along these line approx 15+ years ago where the arse of an old outdoor water heater let go while I was visiting home, came back after 2 weeks away and turned on the tap...no hot water, went out the back and checked the tank and the pilot light hadn't gone out so gas was still on trying to heat water that was just pouring out the rusted out arse of the tank, Completely my fault for not switching everything off.

Few months later the quarterlies come in and fark me gas was 2.3k and water was way over. Gave both Sydney Water and AGL a call and they said if I can provide evidence of not being home they'll review the bills, I supplied my boarding pass and plumbers bill and both companies waved the fees and charged for the same period the previous year...doubt that would happen now.

Remember when you just never had to fix these things they just lasted forever - I had to replace the taps / spout everything in the ensuite vanity unit - As I started to disassemble it all the braided hoses were all rusted and rubber poking through in several places so was lucky I did have to replace stuff I would have never thought to check.
As part of the process to get a now connection hose the only one in the right length was one that claimed to stop water flow if it detected a leak and stop flooding - seemed like a good idea to me given what I found.
Had to change the taps in the ensuite shower as they were leaking and they are the quarter turn ceramic ones so no washers to fix - Change the taps over and as part of the process i turned the vanity tap on after turning mains off to let excess water in pipes out - Change shower taps and go on my merry way - Next day geta text there is no water coming from the vanity tap - i am like WTF I never touched it - Seems the connector hose decided cause the pressure dropped it was a leak and sealed up the connector hose - Sigh - I am not built to be under vanity sinks anymore and changed the hose for bog stock standard one again :)

Started thinking and House was built probably in 2002 ish and replaced hoses in 2024 and shower taps in 2012 with the ceramic quarter turns so in reality compared to previous experiences didnt last long at all

I had a hose to the clothes washing machine burst when I wasn’t home, got a text from the neighbour saying they could hear water. Luckily my laundry is outside so it all just went down the drain! The hoses are such poor quality!

A former work colleague had one of the flexible rubber hoses going to the washing machine burst due to old age.

There were some complications:
- It was the hot water hose that burst.
- The tap had been left on.
- Said washing machine was at the home of a recently deceased relative.
- The house had already been cleaned out, so no-one went past for a while (can't remember the exact timeframe, but it was in the range from a few days to a couple of weeks).
- It steamed the entire house to buggery, to the point that the roof beams were sodden and the insurance company ended up writing it off (after some fairly serious investigations), knocking it down and building a new house.

I turn the taps off to the washing machine once it's done now.
