Qualifying on a street circuit, chef's kiss 👌

Not sold either way on the finals thing, but it does seem to be adding something to this round.

I was on the fence about the finals up until now, I reckon it's great. That made for some extra action and all the guys that were in contention most of the season are in the final seven. Except Kostecki, hopefully he keeps racing hard but I also hope he stops bitching about the engine parity rubbish, it's not interesting.

Only ever got to Oran Park once for the round in 1992, of course the GTRs were 1st, 2nd and 3rd with a time zone to the next place finisher but 9 year old me didn't care. Awesome track. Pity they didn't try and keep any of it when it was rebuilt into a housing estate.
I drove it twice before it was shut down. Toyota invited me for a day twice, with the then current MR2 and Celica for a day each. The Bates brothers were giving tips for each day. Good track, was lots of fun!!

Edit - memory loss: The Celica was at Eastern Creek, the MR2 at Oran Park.

Can't say I understand this concept of "finals", what is it? Are drivers eliminated from being able to win the championship?

Some of the kerb hopping at the Gold Coast was insane, jumping the kerbs and not getting out of shape was impressive

Pretty much nailed it. Top 10 on points going into the Gold Coast were eligible to progress to win the championship, bottom three of those knocked out after the weekend. Those 7 left are then reduced to 4 after the next race at Sandown. Those 4 then race for glory in Adelaide.

There are naysayers, as always, but nine of the top ten were all in the Saturday shoot-out. And the pressure and expectations were clearly ramped up. Look at the way Kostecki/Commins/DJR crumbled.

The others still race, we won't have to watch just 4 cars race around Adelaide, and have incentive to win. The races are still races, and championship points are still awarded for those with sponsorship deals based on points earnt. And there will be all sorts of gamesmanship on display. Team mates are team mates after all!

Me too!

For all the whining about Wood/WAU playing dirty, that car was never going to be competitive anyway. And Feeny never had to run him into the wall.

So um, that was interesting! Some of the standouts for me:
-Ryan Walkinshaw is a cockhead. We knew that anyway but yeah; he's an unsporting wanker.
-The Ford fans made noise all year about the lack of parity and how unfair it was. They've walked away with the Bathurst win and the Championship. Fact.
-Everyone praised Ryan Wood for stopping anyone getting near Mostert in all the races leading up to yesterday. You all praised him for it, stupid Skaife praised him for it, they gave him fancy names to praise him for it. The only logical move he could have pulled next to really ice that cake was take the competition out of the race so Mostert could win. And make no mistake, he took that opportunity the first chance he got. I really feel bad for the kid, he's clearly been told (and again; praised) to do it. You could see in his interview that he was shaken up by it.
-The Finals system didn't reward the best driver of the year, it rewarded the guy that was best at the time. I'm not anti the finals idea but it's an odd feeling seeing Feeney with almost four times the amount of race wins lose to Mostert. Not that it matters but based on points scored without a finals system; Feeney won by a mile with Mostert fourth.
-That was almost certainly the last time Neil Crompton will commentate a race. Apparently the commentary is getting a big shake up but we'll STILL have that bumbling fuckwit Skaife talking way too much. Get rid of Skaife, keep Crompton!
-888 are now a Ford team. Wankinshaw are now a Toyota team. In my books, neither of them will be any threat next season and the crowd will all go buy different T shirts for next season.
-We need reverse grid races to keep the rounds interesting. For the Saturday race, Award big points for qualifying then reverse the grid. Award points for winning races & getting podiums but also award points for the amount of cars passed. Then on Sunday do a qualifying session then race in the order you qualified but use two different tyre compounds.

Thoughts?

Finals. Interesting concept but I totally agree you can be the best all year and you still might not win. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. Maybe Supercars are trying to emulate a bit of NRL/AFL vibe to bring the end of the season to a crescendo?

Skaife is a waffler and I'm not really a fan of how much of influence/decision making he's had in the sport but also commentates. Probably the same scenario as Gus Gould with NRL.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again - the parity argument could easily be addressed if they adopted a category like GT4 that already has it. Adding another manufacturer in the mix will just cause more problems. As it did with Nissan, Volvo & Mercedes - and they didn't stick around.

Something I genuinely struggle with is telling the cars apart. Alot of them look the same and the sponsorship layout looks busy (tonnes of little logos everywhere). And Erebus - gheez they must be prickly to deal with as their cars always look like they're lacking sponsorship. I'll admit I glance at the category but I think the whole thing is a bit stale and lacks any relevance to anything. It's stand alone and niche.

clearly they wanted a climax to the season and you cant promise that with a proper league, most points wins. but most finals dont involve the random mishaps of motorsport, or other teams who aren't directly competing for the win in that final. its a crappy concept but the controversy got a lot of coverage and thats more important than the sporting aspect so there's no chance it will be improved and dumped next year

To reinforce your point, it's been many years since I made of point of watching any round other than Bathurst, but I watched all three finals live.

I think that was the entire point of it, it certainly worked.
At the awards night they put Marcos Ambrose in the Hall of Fame. I hoped the next award that massive cockhead would get would be Biggest fuckwit on earth but there's clearly too many candidates to pick just one ;)
