V-Brake movement

Servicing my "PK Ripper" the other night I noticed that the v-brake arms have 4mm of movement axially at the end of the arm.

The pic shows the direction of the movement.

How much play is acceptable?

The bike stops fine but it seems like alot to me.

have never actually measured the movement but they all have it. even xtr's i had did it. if they work dont stress i think it is because they pull towards the frame when you stop.

I not sure if there an exact answer. My commuter bike has V brakes and they work fine, however a while I go I did take it down a decent descent and while braking really heavily on rough ground the arm twisted around enough that the brake pad popped inside the rim and then locked up the wheel (so I skidded off into a tree!). After it just popped back out and it still works fine - I ride it as my commuter. I actually tried to see if it would fail again but even skidding etc I never could get it to fail again.
