The watch thread.

Hey watchers, I have a Tag Heuer F1 that needs the battery replaced and IIRC, the last one I had (and lost wakeboarding 20yrs ago) was about $100 to replace the battery. Plus the pain of taking it there and going back to pick it up.

It uses a $10 394 battery and the YT vids show people using all kinds of tools to remove the back cover.

Anyone used the AliExp 3-point special with success. Cheers

How much do you like the watch?

Using a specialist for an expensive watch is cheap insurance. Even G-Shocks have specialist seals and tools for servicing.

Good news MOR! Good to hear!

If you want to replace a watch, I have put together quite a good watch collection the last few years. And know personally quite a few watch boutique staff. Breitling, Panerai, Hublot, Omega, Bausele, U-Boat, Tag, Grand Seiko I'm on first name terms with many.

But, if you know what you want Hour Glass will give very good discounts to save up to thousands.

If you visit Sydney we can go for a watch crawl, and sample their champagne. :)

This is my Case Opener, from AliExpress. Does the job.

I work a couple of blocks from Tag Heuer Sydney boutique. For a Tag, I'd recommend the battery change service. They replace seals and give it a pressure test at same time. I did the same service for my wife Aquaracer last year. Also gives me the chance to say hello to the lovely Anna in store.

You could post it to me, and I'll walk it up for you.

This was a function I attended at Tag Heuer in May in Sydney. Was for release of new Formula One and Monaco watches, but also to present Werner Bronkhurst, the artist who has works in Tag boutiques.

Breitling Navitimer Rattrapante is mine - just comparing to some Tag pieces.

Thanks mate!

Hour Glass is where I bought my IWC and they gave a reasonable discount whilst drinking their stuff.........

Next time I'm in the city I'll give you a bell, last time got very hectic very quickly!

Well this is shit......; A week out from the new sailing season, my Ronstan (a brand only Yachties will know) sailing watch has seemingly blown a section of its display, specifically the digit that shows 10s of sec. in the last minute before a start, the most important part of a race start!

It's not a fancy watch by any stretch against many that have been posted here, but it's supposed to perform a not-that-difficult function.

It's time to join the Garmin Borg.

Who makes decent aftermarket straps?

Noticed the leather strap on my Grand Carrera has split. No worries, went to Tag website to order a new one like I did 5 years ago, nothing. Have contacted my local store but not holding my breath.

Hodinkee used to sell decent ones, but their online shop has closed now I think.

Sorry that's unhelpful.

Thanks. Genuine crocodile leather strap is around $500. I have only purchased one in the past (negotiated a spare set included with the sale). Not super keen on spending that again, but I seem to get around 5 years out of each strap so I guess that's not too bad.

One friend just bought two from Tag.

But had to ring them: 1800-809915

They are very helpful. Jessica and Anna are awesome.

So anyway, my son is now an almost fully grown human and decided he needs to wear an analogue watch, rather than the 1K eeewatch he got for Xmas last year. He is yet to finish the thing that would dictate purchase of said watch as his own.
I lent him a Ti quartz Tag Tiger Woods Golf watch. I had just had it serviced, glass re-cemented, new seals, pressure tested and battery, etc before it was put in safe about 2 1/2 years ago. I only ever get a watch out for weddings nowadays and prefer something flashier. I used to wear a nice watch for years without complaint before this but don't wear a watch at work now (on the tools) so put them away.
Fast forward and the Tag stopped working... needs a battery i thought and dropped it in for one at the shop. I have used them for years and they have fixed a number of Watches including a great rebuild on my James Bond Seamaster i wore everyday in the mines and was quite, ummm, weathered.
Call back saying needs a new board as it has had water in it. Son says never swam with it or showered he swears, but still it 's a waterproof watch apparently. He said he had seen slight condensation on inside however.
I queried the 'quote' saying they had just serviced and tuned it up. Out of warranty they say and 'anyway, you can't seal a square watch from the elements '. I am so glad i paid them to replace seals /glass and pressure test it then... WTAF?

TLDR: 660 dollars for new board before it will work again apparently. Had another watch maker take a quick look at it too and he said looks like a new board as well. I met him at one of the Tag Heuer come N try booze nights in ADL.
Ever heard this idea that square can't be trusted to seal?

There are plenty of tech dive watches that are rectangular.

. But they are meant to get checked every year.

Just be thankful it's not an antique Cartier or Piaget. Ask me how I know.

No watch is ever waterproof. That terminology was removed from the industry decades ago.

Does the watch have a depth rating on it? My Speedmaster is rated at 50m and while Omega assure on their website at that rating you can swim with it, I wont though. I wont let any of my watches under 100m get wet at all. Then you've got my Breitling Seawolf which is rated at 3,000m.

Hmmm. I have never heard of a square watch being unable to be sealed. I will ask that question from now though. I don't know that answer, but will investigate. I have no real idea of the engineering, but a seal might not have the integrity required if it has corners to fit into a quare watch.
