The watch thread.

I have to say that reproductions had been appealing for a while but the more I searched there have been cheaper versions of the brands I like. Providing they are not dodgies masquerading as dinky di. That's what has been worrying me with mail order.
The knock off's are just for fun.

What do you mean this expensive watch is $20? The 'quality' is always improving for what it is worth.

Hmm, scrub that one then. May well do some proper research into what I really like instead of just window shopping.
Def want manual wind or auto
There's some really cool vintage automatic soviet stuff from a brand called Raketa floating around. Good price point for entry into automatics and interesting pieces from a really fucked up place/time.

Had a look, seems like the manual wind ones are cheap and good looking. You may have changed my thinking on watches. More retro than my bikes. Cheers for that

Anyone know much about the Omega/Swatch watches.
They look mad as for a 5 hundred dollar watch.
Google tells me good or bad depending where I look. Obviously one would get a proper band

I like them too.

But they are just a look-alike for the dial. The case is plain grey plastic. Its just a Swatch internally. Its not a fake, but its not real either.

I have not seen them in the flesh as they don't have a store in Sydney to check them out. One mate who looked at a Mission to the Moon thought it was complete rubbish. Until I can check them out properly I'm not going to think of getting one.

Eerw, didn't realize they were plastic.

Ok, looks like it's definitely a Russian mechanical watch. Look what some dickhead went and did with the bulk of the watch money

Ok watch faces, I have been looking at a couple quartz (eeww) watches.
One in particular is an Omega constellation from the 90s, research tells me quartz watches wear out after 20 or 30 years so the question I pose is.
Can they be fixed to continue on to usable condition or not.
If not is it feasible to replace the movement with a more generic quartz movement.
Google gives me much conflicting info so just hoping someone may be in the know.

Omega makes one of the best quartz movements ever. It will be fine. There were some digital Omegas from the 70s with not great circuit boards (but highly collectible) but the 90s onwards movements all share common ancestry with the Seamaster/Speedmaster lines and they were certified.

Omega/Swatch also carry a very very long tail of spares here, in Singapore, and in Switzerland.

I recommend these guys in Sydney for servicing https://www.maxswisswatch.com/.

So I have a shitty chrono24 experience to share.

I've had a watch for sale on there for a little while. Listing was simple, proving possession of the watch was simple (take a photo showing a specific time). And off she went.

Renewed the listing some months later, doing the same photo captcha thing no problem.

Come around to renewing the listing this time, they don't accept the captcha photo. Ask me to take a photo of the watch with my photo ID....

So I tell them they're dreaming, explain the recent ID thefts via optus and medibank. No dice. Apparently it's their policy.... so it's their policy to potentially allow somone to sell a watch without verifying their identity for 6 months, but now I must be a criminal selling a stolen watch.

After some back and forth. They send me an invoice for the commission as if I've sold the watch even though I have given them photo evidence of the watch in my possession sans my photo ID. Nope, pay the commission, you must have sold the watch because youre refusing to take a photo of it with your ID.

Issue is ongoing, but I've sent them various pictures of the watch next to hard core pornography with some sticky notes with the date written down and a couple of other interesting ways. Considdeing fastening it around my junk and sending them a pic of that at this point lol.

Anyway, as a buyer, chrono 24 is great. As a seller, I'd like to say they are fucking dog shit. Pretty crappy experience over the last few days. So much so I will never sell anything there again.

That's pretty shit.

Sounds like what eBay is like these days.
